Cane Creek launches World Bicycle Relief headset

Buy laser-engraved, stainless steel limited edition headset, get a bike sent to Africa

World Bicycle Relief is a charity that supplies bicycles to communities in the developing world, such that people may more easily carry useful stuff (like water and food) over the considerable distances that are often involved. Various manufacturers have involved themselves in the WBR effort, with Cane Creek being the latest.

Cane Creek's initiative centres around a limited edition Reserve headset. It's making 500 intricately laser-engraved stainless steel headsets, each one numbered and supplied in a Western Cedar box. Cane Creek will make a donation, enough to provide one bike ($134, apparently), directly to World Bicycle Relief for each headset sold.

The WBR Reserve headsets are made in Cane Creek's factory in Fletcher, North Carolina. The engraving design is the work of headset design engineer Jim Morrison (who has no doubt had plenty of comments about his name, so we'll refrain from making any more). "I couldn't be prouder of this design and the organization it will benefit," said Morrison.

Only 500 World Bicycle Relief Reserve headsets will be produced. They'll be $200 each, and you can reserve one right now at www.canecreek.com. You can find out more about the work of World Bicycle Relief at www.worldbicyclerelief.org.

Wow so for what we can afford to spend on just a headset, that can afford to pay for a whole bike for an african.

So we pay £1000s for rugged, light, strong bikes with good suspension that let you travel at speed over rough ground. But we only use them for fun, and just at weekends. While the people who actually need decent mountain bikes get rugged but antiquated, rigid, singlespeed town bikes.

I really hope all this MTB tech trickles down to the developing countries soon....They need it more than we do
