Strengths: big hit capability, infinitely tunable rear shock, great spec, stability. 8 Bl*&din' inches ferchrissakes.... sealed bearings, adjustability of angles of dangle, looks, ISCG mounts oh i could go on....
Weaknesses: errr, i can't have more than one?.....
Overall: first time on big hit having always ridden single pivot full sussers (Giant AC team play bike excepted) and the way it rides is, in my humble opinion, far better than any single pivot bike. Now i'm not talking if Steve Peat was piloting it, i'm talking about your average man in the street, occasional racer with a job and a real life, rather than a world-class career racer... This bike forgives my failures far more than a single pivot, putting the brakes on keeps me rooted rather than skipping but better still, taking the brakes off moves me up to a speed that should scare me but instead inspires me.... Not really a big jump/drop-off monkey but i can, will do and have done it on this bike....
spec on mine:
Big hit expert frame, 4-way swinger shock RS Boxxer 02, TFtuned Hope bulb F&R, 521 front, DMR revolver rear. Hope mono 4-pot 203 mm front, hope M4 185 mm rear. SRAM X0 shifters, mech, road cassette and chain Answer pro tapers, tioga multi-control, Maxxis high rollers F&R Truvative holzfeller cranks, Goldtec manacle chain device.
Strengths: just brought one back from a holiday in whistler. awesome bike, had me looking good. very forgiving for a beginner at jumping, but took everything i could throw at it and then some.
Weaknesses: not really for climbing unless you use gondolas as in whistler
Overall: the best freeride and downhill bike for the average joe. very good value if you buy in canada
Strengths: Bags of travel with enough adjustments to keep you scratching your head for a while. Decent off the shelf spec.
Weaknesses: It's quite heavy and isn't exactly designed for climbing the hills. The specialized tyres aren't exactly the best.
Overall: A perfect bike for the UK DH scene with enough travel to cope with anything you throw at it. Works well out of the box. Now the Demo 8 is being released you can pick new ones up fairly cheaply, i got £500 of mine at Evans Cycles in the sale.
Strengths: This bike forgives you for all those mistakes. First real jump I was being towed in by a 4wd on sand, I let go of the rope out of balance and landed all crossed up. The bighit sucked it all up and kicked me straight... bloody miracle... This bike loves it rough so ride it hard and you will be smiling all day long.
Weaknesses: I've had people tell me the 24 wheel won't roll as fast as a 26 in a straight line...blah...blah. I'm not a world cup rider so I don't give a toss. As for riding the beast up hill, back in NZ we leave that to the Lycra clad XC riders!
Overall: This bike is great, I bought the frame and shock new and built it up. It took too long (with a couple of bike shop f**k ups eg. lacing the back wheel wrong) but got there in the end and it rode pretty well. I decided to send the forks and rear shock to TF Tuned Shox for a service and fine tune - which made a big improvement. I'm really pleased with the end product. A great ride!
