Strengths: Crisp easy 1 finger (well thumb) shifting. Smaller unit than shimano. Choice of brakes (no dual control)
Weaknesses: can mis shift over bumpy terrain with your thumb
Overall: when shimaNO made dual control some things things happend. People still wanted hope disk brakes et al SRAM made these after there X.0 was a huge hit but expensive People bought these in there masses and bike companies started putting them on there bikes SRAM anr no longer the underdogs after shimaNO's biggest mistake ever if you ask me.
'CRISP SHIFTING BUT LEVER POSITION WON`T SUIT SOME'
Strengths: shifting is flawless, much better than shimano especially when riding in muddy conditions
Weaknesses: the levers do get in the way, no matter where i positioned the levers i kept catching my thumbs on the right hand up shift and the left downshift.
Overall: great shifting but i could`t put up with the lever positions so i swapped them for XO`s, yes they are expensive but they have far more adjustability.
Overall: The action is more positive than rapidfire, but the big difference is the position of the levers, the release lever is perfect to just flick with the thumb, and still be able to hit the brakes. Going back to my other bike with shimano, it just feels wrong. The only problem I've had is that the gear indicator bar on the rhs has disapeared.
Strengths: I like the way these things shift. the 1:1 definitely makes a difference.
Weaknesses: cost?
Overall: I changed over to these things because I wanted to try my Tracer with the adjustable geometry without slapping my rear deraileur on the chainstay. Srams stuff allowed me to do just that. It seems to move up or down, prior to finishing the thumb movement. I had XT before and it was never bad or out of adjustment, but I fancied a change. These are working excellently and I am getting used to the thumb movements required to operate these triggers. The matching x9 rear mech works a treat.
They were easy to set up in less than an hour! Once fitted they needed no further adjustments.
Strengths: The double thumb shifting style is almost impossible to live without. Looks good. Shifts nice and precisely.
Weaknesses: Mine stopped shifting after 18 months
Overall: I am very impressed with both the feel and layout of this shifter. It feels more robust and cleaner when shifting compared to X7 and don’t think I would go back to the old finger-thumb layout of Shimano shifters. I found it easy to set up and it remained working perfectly even through the worst winter muck.
That is until it just stopped shifting two weeks ago. It seams that the sealing of the unit is not perfect and some muck got in the housing leading to complete failure of the shifter. I make sure to clean my gear thoroughly and was amazed to see the state of the shifter when I opened it (by the way I’m not sure you if are supposed to open it as the spring inside went flying) and despite a good clean it was knackered. At the same time I decided to strip my other SRAM shifters and they were fine so this could a one off.
18 months is not bad but by no means good. Having said that the fact you can buy the left and right hand units separately means the expense is kept down. I will say that the shifter had covered a lot of miles and seen some serious abuse (I'm not the most delicate of riders) and never diminished in performance right up to its demise.
The fact that I immediately went out and bought a new X9 shifter to replace the broken one says it all really.
Strengths: I fundamentally prefer the shifting style to Shimano, thumb shifting is easier to control, especially on descents. Shifting positive and crisp.
Weaknesses: There seem to be some underlying reliability issues - for both front mech and rear mech I have had the shifters sticking (after 1 year) which I resolved for the front but not the rear despite loads of lube (I then replaced the shifter). Two others I ride with have reported very much the same problem. Plastic end cap pain to get out without it chewing up!
Overall: Despite the question mark over reliability I wouldn't shift with anything else. I haven't really had any problems with the levers during rides. Making the change from Shimano only takes one ride to get used to and after that it is truely second nature. Easier to adjust on the trail as adjustment is at the shifters only.
I have both X.7 and X.9 and would recommend spending the extra.
Strengths: Feel very good, unbelievably fast and positive shifting with XO mech.
Weaknesses: Not sure about colour (bright silver paint), and shape of 'up' lever...
Overall: Had thought of swithching to twisties when I decided to replace XT mech with XO - but having felt the action of the X-9s decided they were for me.
Took 1 ride to get used to the different action, but now I'm using them instinctively. Combined with the XO mech, shifting is fast, smooth and very positive. Even the LX front mech works better. Gear indicator incorporated into mount is brilliant. I'm very pleased I made the change (no pun intended!).
Like Shimano it's best to back off ever so slightly when shifting under load.
Downsides - would prefer black finish of X-7s, but X-9s feel so much better the choice was a no-brainer; don't like the look of the 'up' lever, but it works just fine; same lever has a tiny amount of 'slop' - I'll let you know if this gets worse.
Strengths: feel good look good work superbly. That gear window one of those why didnt they do that b4 things. get to keep your brakes if u dont like these new flip flop shifters
Weaknesses: ermmmm non yet
Overall: having used shimano shifters and mechs for the last 7yrs came to replace my xt mech and lx shifters wasnt much for the new xt shifters or mech then spotted the sram offerings. Why not lets give them a whirl. 9 shifter with 7 mech. the shift is done b4 youve released the trigger shimano half shifts then another half when released again why not think of this b4? Take no time to get used to and you get to keep your brakes :)
no reliability isues yet but early days so will leave a 3 to be fair cant see any problems tho
Weaknesses: break far to easily.the push lever has no limit so it can go right round in a fall and break inside.we have done three in 6 months and our deore ones are years old in daily use
Overall: untrustworthy.shifting great but a tiny little cast part inside snaps making unit useless in even the smallest of offs.
