Strengths: 2 Years on me bike now and no complaints whatsoever.
[Update 06/01/08] 4 Years on me bike now and apart from pad changes they've been totally maintenance & hassle free!
Weaknesses: Very occasional squeal, or is that my riding partner.
[Update 06/01/08] None!
Overall: Fitting was simple after a little messing with spacers (insignificant compared to setting upo cantis at times but alittle more fiddly than vees. Two years use has revealed no problems and braking performance is more than adequate for my xc needs, in fact brill compared to the vees they replaced.
[Update 06/01/08] Top product. If like me you want to brake as late as poss in all weathers and particualrly Peak District peat then discs have to be about the greatest mtb development.
Strengths: Light and very pretty. One piece CNC machined caliper helps to provide a solid feel. Modulation is exceptional.
Weaknesses: Prone to leaks and invariable pad drag. On the back there is always a lazy piston. Set up needs to be thorough to get the best performance from these barkes. Stock pads could be better and the overall power form a 180x160mm system is no better than a Shimano one... which costs considerable less. The rotors border on down right flimsy.
Overall: Mine have been inconsistent over several years. Modulation is good, very good but the brakes require more grunt, even for a X-country set-up. I have had leaks which I have remedied by installing braided hoses...and this has helped to marginally increase the overall power. By changing the stock pads to Fibrax ....again a slight improvement. The rotors border on down right flimsy, I have bent my front one but managed to get it back into shape. However the back brake (the rotor that I did not bend) has always got one pot that wil not move. The pots take it in turn to stick and this seems an endemic fault in many of Hope's hydraulic products. Simply put I feel that Hope might have taken more time in testing these brakes, they are not up to the consistent quality of say Formula or some of Hayes XC products and they are expensive.
Strengths: to be seen - suggest lighter per comparable mini, the single piece caliper will be stiffer = improved braking performance (?), less squealing (?), and the black caliper with fins might offer slightly better heat dissipation compared to silver alloy minis (black emits heat better, fins marginally increase surface area for heat transfer)??
Weaknesses: Haven't used yet so all is summission, only weakness I think so far is gold circular central cap on caliper contrasting the black caliper - might not be verybody's taste - particularly as silver / black is particularly in favour at mo' and looks cool. Apparently Hope are to offer different annodised finishes to the piston caps ie offering alternative to gold.
Overall: will let you know within the week , once brakes are fitted, I am upgrading from some fairly new minis (tart? yes, but if you could you would, and seeing as someone offered me a good price on me old brakes, and had a bonus at work - why not!).
Apologies for scores - but wanted to register the product to encourage others to enter feedback
Strengths: i've just switched from v's bedded them in nicely, power seems to go up on every ride so far, i know this is going to be controversal, but i fitted them myself with no problems, might just luck/patience.
Weaknesses: none as yet so far no squeal
Overall: superb. i originally ordered formula b4 pros from merlin and got offered mono minis at no extra as they were out of stock. turned out to be a result. i'm a new convert to discs and i'm not sure how i survived before. i'm givein reliability a 3 as only time will tell
Strengths: Stopping power, ease of fitting. Superb looks (on a set of black disc specific Ronins).
Weaknesses: Why, oh why, do Hope insist on sending them out with so much hose on the front. Got home from my last ride to find three sheep tangeled in the loop dragging along behind.
This can easily be cured by cutting the hose but this means bleeding (using a Hope bleed kit at £25) with the possibility of subsequent lack of performance if bodged.
Overall: Gone are my LX rim brakes - the disc age has landed.
Discs have been ridden for about 10 short sharp xc rides and seem to have bedded in well, no squeel even in the wet.
Can get a set now for about £100 each and the confidence they give you is worth the money alone.
Levers are the hangers of the hound - solid, reach adjustable and look superb combined with XT shifter.
So far nothing but praise but time will tell, will have to adjust the reliability value later as no-one would expect kit of this expense to break in a month.
Strengths: Powerful, easy to modulate, good lever shape, light, Hope after sales service, great looks, good value.
Weaknesses: None so far.
Overall: My first set of discs and they're stunning. I've tried alternatives from Shimano and Hayes, as well as the old mini, and these beats them all. I probably shouldn't have ordered them with the 180mm disc for my hardtail, but you get so much feel and modulation i think i'll cope. At least the bike will stop, even if i don't.
Weaknesses: Noise- even in the dry mine persist on making a horrible squealing Can be hard to set up- not if you take it to the LBS though!
Overall: I bought these brakes to use for xc racing as they were lighter than most. I'm not unhappy with them, but I was expecting a little more stopping power after previously using v-brakes. The power will be better with a larger rotor at the front though.
Modulation is good, but the real thing that bugs me is the noise it emits! I havent tried anything to stop it yet, but as soon as I took it from the shop it was squealing.
