Strengths: They are light weight & relitivaly cheap price for a good downhill rim.
Weaknesses: They look quite plain and boring compared to many rims.
Overall: These rims take a lot of abuse there are so many times that i have twisted a landing of a drop and they have just shrugged their shoulders. Also because of the weight these also make for good extreme trail riding rims. For this price you would be hard pushed to find a better rim. The only problem i have had is the tyre bead popping out of the rim a couple of times when landing a jump a bit heavy.
Weaknesses: erm... none. Mavic are seen by some as 'boring' but thats just stupid.
Overall: If you want fit and forget wheels, get D521's. If they are built up well, they'll just need the occasional tweak of the nipples (don't we all) and they'll last forever. And that includes DH racing, freeride, trials etc.
Strengths: Strength, Weight (nowhere near downhill rims), smoothed join.
Weaknesses: The eyelets can get ripped out if the spokes are over-tightened, i've done it before, get your LBS to do it. Not as strong as CD version. Possibly too thin for some.
Overall: Okay but if you can afford it i'd go for the CD version instead, especially on full-sus bikes. Good beginners trials rim due to cheapness and strength. Good trials front rim if you want some strength and less weight at the same time.
Strengths: THEY ARE SUPERB VALUE FOR MONEY, AND ARE THE STRONGEST RIMS OUT THERE FOR ANY TYPE OF RIDING-DUE TO THE NICE BIG CURVED CROSS SECTION. PEOPLE THINK THEY ARE NOT AS GOOD AS MAMMOTHS BUT THEY ARE WAY BETTER, AS A FLAT CROSS SECTION RIM (I.E THE MAMMOTH) WILL FOLD EASIER THAN A CURVED CROSS SECTION RIM (I.E THE D521).MINE LASTED FOR A YEAR AND A HALF AND I HAVE HAD THEM TRUED ONCE DUE TO MY CRAP WHEEL BUILDER( THEY WERE FROM ON YER BIKE , IN OADBY, LEICESTER)
Weaknesses: THERE ARNT ANY I CAN THINK OF EXCEPT THAT YOU NEED A DECENT WHEEL BUILDER ,ALTHOUGH THAT IS THE SAME WITH ANY OTHER RIM
Overall: BRILLIANT STREGTH TO WEIGHT RATIO AND CHEAP TO REPLACE IF YOU SOME HOW MANAGE TO BREAK THEM!
'cheap, strong, THE Standard for DH / Slalom rims'
Strengths: Very strong Light enough so you can still pedal! resists abuse subtle looks widely available
Weaknesses: cannot get in 24" !!! maybe not as strong as those stupidly heavy rims on the market
Overall: the industry standard DH / Slalom rim. I prefer these to the 321 as you can use them with disc or v-brakes, they're lighter too and that makes your bike able to go up hills after coming down hills. Not much more to say really, but please make a 24" version Mavic!
Overall: I've tried to break these rims for 2 years. TWO YEARS! Can I do it? Can I hell. I want to replace my rims with F519s to shed some weight, but will only do it when I kill the D521s. Which looks like it'll take a LONG time. Great rims, really.
