Strengths: Maguras only have a tiny amount of movement in the lever once the pads hit the rim.Which means you stop dead.Very little mantainance needed (contrary to popular belief).Lots of colors.
Weaknesses: More expensive than V's.Fiddly to initially set up.
Overall: Great stopping power, good modulation, very little to go wrong, good warranty but slightly exspensive :-)
Strengths: Very powerful rim brakes, easy pad replacement, and now available for under £100 including postage
Weaknesses: Initial set up takes a bit of time and both front and rear come with tubing that needs to be cut down to fit (front and rear are supplied with same length of tubing)
Overall: Once fitted and set up these brakes have proven to be the best upgrade for my bike so far. I work in a cycle shop and until I fitted these the best brake set up I had tried were all disk based. These brakes can really hold there heads up high when compared to other rim brakes and are definitely much better than cable disk systems. Buy them now!!!
Strengths: once fitted, easy to maintain and alter. pads last longer.
Weaknesses: two to four hours to set up. instructions not good enough for non qualified mechanics although when figured out you will wonder what all the hassle was about
Overall: get someone to teach you how to fit them, then persuade everyone you know to get them, and teach them in turn. once you own a set you will giggle a lot at other peoples systems.
Strengths: Good performance in all conditions. Especially compared to V brakes, but only in the wet. In other conditions V brakes win on performance easily.
Weaknesses: I can set up Deore V brakes to work twice as good as the maguras. Not worth £100 pounds. V brakes are a lot easier to set up and maintain. Plus V Brakes work better.
Overall: Buy V brakes and learn to set them up properly. Then you'll see that Maguras are a waste of money. A set of Deore break leavers and brakes work twice as good as magura HS33's!
Strengths: Stunning looks, really good stopping power, pads easy to swap( just click off)suit any bike or riding style, cheap, only 100 squid for pair, 5 YEAR LEAK PROOF WARRANTY!!!!!
Weaknesses: buggers to setup, must be setup different for different tyre sizes.tubes scratch frames easily.
Overall: Good price for hydraulic brakes that look good and preform great.
Strengths: The Magura HS33 are just right and are my favourite brakes that I have come across yet. The Hope C2 disc brakes that I fitted to my DMR are too powerful and will send you over the handlebars with no trouble. They may be good but that is stupid. Instead I opted for Magura Hydraulic's for my Merlin and it gives enough Endo height without sending you over the handlebars with no hassle.
Weaknesses: Maybe not enough braking power to lift heavy bikes up ono the front wheel to a high enough extent.
Overall: Great! They, in my opinion are the best brakes around but as I don't have a heavy bikes I don't really know about Endo height but they work on my bike. They won't send you over the handlebars neither. And at £100 they beat Hope C2 whih cost £350!
Strengths: Superb modulation, 10 second brake block change, easy pad adjuster. No brake cables, so no maintenance (don't listen to gloom about hydraulic leaks). The best rim brakes by far.
Weaknesses: Not top quality castings. Could easily be lighter (e.g. lever). Don't self centre, harder to get back wheel in/out. A NIGHTMARE TO FIT!!!
Overall: Scream at them for an hour or two to get them aligned. Then marvel at their power and modulation for 5 years (length of anti-leak warranty). Good riddance brake cables!
Overall: When I first put my racelines on they worked well but after about a week all sorts of problems occured. I serviced them regulary and they always got crapper and crapper. If you are in the market for quality rim brakes go for a good set of avid v's or even better save up for discs, thats what I did and I never looked back!
