Strengths: Simple design why has it taken so long for this to be designed? It is light weight even the most expensive shimano pedals cant compete with the cheapest egg beaters. The looks you get from average joe at your pedals is superb.
Weaknesses: People harp on about bearings but I have yet to witness this problem. The 2 bars can make grooves but if you look on ebay the is a guy selling beater blockers I think they are called.
Overall: A superb pice of kit very light very fast to clip in.
Strengths: Light Uncloggable Smooth and positive engagement Float
Weaknesses: Bearings/cleat wear Bars can wear sole
Overall: Fantastic design. They never clog and the 4 way entry and nice slick action is great.
The bars of the pedal can mark or groove a softer shoe over time but are fine with most race type stiffer soles.
I've worn out one pair-after 2 years and another set on one bike needed a (cheap) bearing rebuild. I now strip and clean/lube mine every few months-a ten minute job. The cleats wear out about too (rather than the pedal itself) but unlike SPD's the release/engage does not noticeably deterioate over time.
This may sound a faff but they are so nice to use that is is well worth it.
Strengths: Do everything you expected of them very well.
Weaknesses: Broke mine in 2.5 hours!
Overall: I bought these pedals for there mud sheading ability as the standard Shimano system is a nightmare in mud. Initially i was really pleased with them, nicely presented in their box, good instruction including a servicing guide, grease purge system to keep the bearings sweet and a very nice engage/disengage action with no problems at all in mud. The down side is that they only lasted 2.5 hours, towards the end of my first ride with them I hit a rock, pretty hard it must be said but nothing that my old Shimano pedals haven't shrugged off plenty of times before. The result was a bent 'bar' but worse, also a bent axle. Not great. I still like this pedal but think carefully about how you ride, if you tend to break things then these pedals are unlikely to survive long.
(Truly Excellent value if you don't break them, really terrible if you do what i did!!)
Strengths: I much prefer the clipping in / out action to my SPD DX pedals, very positive. Like everyone says they don't clog with mud. Look nice and svelt especially compared to my DX bricks. Cost not bad for weight. Never needed any maintenance.
Weaknesses: Snapped a wing on my first ride by just clipping in, replaced under warrenty by CRC. Have just broken them after 20 months of rock strikes. I tend to strike the pedals on rocks alot and am amazed they survived this long. Eventually I bent a wing which then cracked when attemping to straighten it, doh! Need stiff shoes with small tread for greatly improved action. Although they don't clog with mud I find them a liability in slow, slippery, twisty conditions when I'd rather not be clipped in, the small size means they really crack your shins!
Overall: Overall they are great pedals but make sure they suit your riding a kit. I now don't know whether to go back to SPD or get the new Acid pedals...
Strengths: Mudshedding superb. Light weight. Easy clipping in and out. Good after-sales support
Weaknesses: Not the most robust.
Overall: Great light pedals with easy clipping in and out. Easy maintenance. I was a little concerned at the ease with which they bent when I hit a rock. Very good support from the importer/distributor.
Strengths: easy to fit, easy to click into and out of, good price, weight, look a bit special too, self cleaning
Weaknesses: fiddly to adjust to for a first time user
Overall: great pedals for the money, but spend half an hour in the garage practising, even if youve used this style before, buy some you wont be dissapointed!
Strengths: The mudshedding, weight is minimal, the level of float is really nice and the 4-sided entry makes it easy to clip in and out of in a hurry
Weaknesses: None (no honestly none)
Overall: I had a set of Crank Brothers Mallet's on my MTB and wanted to stay with the same system when I bought my road bike. I use these on my road bike but they are so good they are now on my MTB too. Can be quite cheap depending on where you look and when you pull up with your bike you will no doubt get some interest. Full re-build kits are available and cant fault the aftersales support.
