Strengths: Durable, easy to remove for cleaning, maintains finish, Powerlink a work of genius, snappy shifting
Weaknesses: Cost compared to Shimano HG93
Overall: I've run SRAM chains for three and a half years now and have had very little to complain about. The cheaper SRAM chains lose their finish quickly (hence the price I guess), but they seem long lasting and a doddle to maintain.
A large amount of my SRAM bias is due to the Powerlink. Shimano's joining pin is a real pain in the proverbial and ensures that removing a chain for cleaning is a rare occurrence. The Powerlink on the other hand ensures that you unclip, soak, clean and refit. Job done.
My maintenence regieme isn't quite what it ought to be (is anyones?) but even so I have eked 18 months useage out of two SRAM PC69 chains and a SRAM cassette (chains being swapped between rides. As one chain is on the bike, the other is soaking in solvent. Purists will berate me for not cleaning in between the links too often...).
In all that time I have never had a chain break and very few mis-shifts. Chainsuck has been rare too, but part of this can be attributed to the high quality chainrings I have fitted.
Bugbears? Well, my biggest beef with the PC-69 - as with most SRAM products - is the cost. Shimano's XTR level (HG93) chain is £20 RRP but can be found for as little as £15. This is the only conceivable advantage to Shimano though.
Strengths: I've been using this chain for some time with a sram 9spd cassette 12-26 and 105 crank set / bb, the changes are as smooth as I've ever known with ultra reliable very long distance ability. I'm impressed, and that's not very easy to do!
Weaknesses: I did weaken, I bought another one before this one showed sign's of extreme wear - that's my problem now though, can't seem to kill the one on the bike!
Overall: Personally, I'd go for this every time, even though I'm keen on shimano shifters
Strengths: Tough chain, stronger & more convenient than a Shimano chocolate chain, and the powerlink.... what would anyone do without one?
Weaknesses: None - unless you count wearing out.
Overall: It was the first thing I upgraded on my old bike, and I noticed the difference straight away. Shifting was smoother & the drivetrain was just quieter. I'd never go back to Shimano chains now, and would recommend this over the cheaper PC-59, and the more expensive PC-89, having tried them both. The performance & price is just perfect.
The powerlink is a miracle of chain design & makes bike maintenance a dream. No carrying round lots of irritating black pins like Shimano chains need, and you can make & break your chain as often as you want.
