Strengths: Looks awesome Very strong Stiff and precise
Weaknesses: a bit heavier than some
Overall: Unbelievable, I picked up one of these for less than a fiver from wiggle, how insane is that?!?! Ok so it's cheap due to them only having the longer lengths but still unbelievable. I got myself a 115mm length in White and it looks totally awesome, bought it to upgrade from a nasty unbranded alloy stem, the hexagonal type profile of this stem looks really neat and the tucked away bolts leaving the back of the stem smooth means that if the worst happens it won't be quite as painful as if there were bolts there. One area that left me a bit disappointed is the weight of this stem, it's not by any means a heavyweight, but when you consider that most Race Face products are usually on the lighter side of the scales I was dismayed when I realised that the cheap nasty unbranded alloy stem I had on the bike is actually lighter than this, admittedly though I would rather have the security of that bit of extra weight knowing that it's bombproof rather than having a cheap welded taiwainese stem which looks tacky and won't be anywhere near as tough the 8 degree rise means that even though this stems put an extra inch onto the length of my bike, it's not really noticable, for me it gives a comfortable position, and the steering response is very positive, if you have forks which flex and a lower end stem you would certainly benefit from this stem as it's rugged nature mean there is a noticable difference to the steering response
Overall: A good value stem that takes the best features of its more pricy brethren. I like the way the steerer clamp has the nasty allen bolts tucked away from the knee/knackers impact area. Quality finish and graphics.
Strengths: Like it's expensive partner, it shares the same good looks, metal quality and desirability value.
Weaknesses: Erm, no, can't think of one yet.
Overall: The stem comes in shorter sizes than the system, so fills the gap. It could be mistaken for a system at a distance, but close up you can tell that it just has not got the finishing quality of it's expensive brother. I would recommend this to anyone who cannot afford the system, or someone who want's the prodigy seatpost and stem for the price of the system stem!
Strengths: Good, tough finish. No noticable flex. Different rises and lengths compared to the more expensive SYStem stem. The Race Face logo!
Weaknesses: None thus far but don't overtighten the bolts or you'll strip the threads.
Overall: Top marks to Race Face for releasing the Prodigy range to the buying public. If you buy these things boxed with instuctions you should take note of the torque settings for the bolts which are much lower than recommended in "Zinn and the art of...". The threads for the bar clamp can be easily stripped by overtightening! 207g (100mm/5 deg rise)
Weaknesses: Really wanted a 70mm but had to do with an 80 (the shortest they do in the Prodigy range)
Overall: Have been well pleased with this stem. Is extremely stiff, lightweight and probably the best £40 I've spent on my bike. I love the plastic eye logo on the front and mine's still going strong after 7 months. And white is the dogs!
