'STUNNING VIEWS, GUT-WRENCHING CLIMBS, LONG SWEEPING DESCENTS'
Strengths: I did this excellent trip in 2004. The great thing about this itinerary is that it caters to everyone who fancies the challenge of climbing some of the Tour de France cols and stage endings. The distance / ascent between each hotel was easily manageable by all in the group, however those wanting a bit more were encouraged to take in a stage ending or two en route. In our group there were several couples of mixed ability and they found that doing this trip meant that they were both suitably challenged by the riding.
Having a support vehicle was great; it transported all our bags and offered snacks, water and amazing bike maintenance! I hired a bike (Commencal Colt) which was much better than expected, much better than the hassle of bringing my own.
I was surprised by the quality of accommodation. Mostly family run small town auberges with a lot of character. The food was a big highlight.
I should also say that the Pyrenees were beautiful and every day the scenery changed dramatically.
Weaknesses: Only my knees!
Overall: I would recommend this trip to any roady or Tour de France nut. This trip stands out from the rest as being totally non competitive, making it especially suitable for mixed ability couples or people worried about being ‘left behind’.
