Description: BikingAndalucia is based in the Sierra Nevada mountains of southern Spain and offers riding for road and off-road cyclists. Due to the climate it's a winter, spring and autumn cycling destination. The area includes tough climbs, endless descents, technical singletrack and more relaxed sections. BikingAndalucia is a small operation, which they say means they can be flexible and offer a friendly, personal touch.

Strengths: A good mix of hardcore riding & adventures, with some 'amble along & enjoy the view' kind of riding thrown in. Dave was good fun & there's a nice relaxed atmosphere. Ogiva is proper Spain with few tourists & salsa lessons/nights were a bonus.
Overall: Superb holiday - the first biking holiday ever and worth every penny - the mix of biking, scenery & culture is great.
Strengths: Amazing riding, great guide, excellent accomodation
Weaknesses: None
Overall: I wouldn't usually go to the same place twice, but we had such a good time last year it would have been wrong not to. Dave is an excellent guide and the whole experience is hugely enjoyable, couldn't recommend it highly enough!! Loved the 'Urban Tech/Downhill/Switchback' descent into Orgiva - truely amazing, and made even better by Ed 'Singletrack King' having to dab on a particularly sketchy switchback!!!!
Strengths: Friendly, flexible, well priced, fantastic riding
Weaknesses: Punctures - pack plenty of tubes
Overall: We just got back from our second trip, a great time had by all. Dave is a fantastic host, friendly, great sense of humour and happy to vary rides to suit you rather than keep to a fixed programme. The cortijo 'El Olivo' is spacious and comfy, cooking facilities are provided for evening meals or you can eat out in town fairly cheaply. Orgiva itself is fairly basic but with has lots of little bars and cafes. You're a lot more likely to get a real Spanish flavour than the more toursity towns.
Finally what it's all about - riding - sublime singletrack, endless downhills and switchback upon switchback. The fantastic rocky sigletrack descent from the hydroelectric plant has got to be my favourite trail, a real test of your skill and stamina! Climbs are challenging but doable at a steady pace, some days Dave will organise an uplift to ease the pain a bit. All in all a great way to escape the winter blues and have a great biking holiday.
'CYCLING SIERRA NEVADA. A SURPRISE BIRTHDAY PRESENT FROM MY '
Strengths: Cumbrian Dave, a top guy. Fantastic cycling in a beautiful environment.Dave manages to push you to you limits whilst maintaining the fun element. without it being
Weaknesses: errrr! None
Overall: I have cycled Mexico, Atlas mountains, Cambodia, Jordan...this was the best! Spent the morning climbing and the afternoons descending.David looked after us and constantly restocked the fridge with cold beers and food. I will be back next year if not earlier.
Strengths: From a "roadies" perspective: Excellent tarmac, light & courteous traffic & those hills just keep on goin' up! Forget Tenerife this is the place to be.
Weaknesses: Cerveza is too cheap....
Overall: Excellent value for money. The guys at BikingAndalucia know their stuff for both the road & mountain scene. Highly recommended.
Strengths: BikingAndalucia is a small operation, which means it can be flexible. You can choose your arrival dates to fit in with cheap flights and choose between a seven day programme of rides, or just pick the days you fancy. It is also astoundingly good value – the first time we visited we were sure there would be some catch (there wasn’t).
David (the guide) has lived in Orgiva for five years and has a fantastic knowledge of the area – he knows the best routes and the best bars.
Being based in Orgiva is also has advantages – the town has all the facilities you could want and is handy for non-cycling trips to Granada or the coast. It is an easy two drive from Malaga – the only complicated bit is getting out of the airport car park.
Weaknesses: It is a small operation – but whether this is a weaknesses or strength depends on your own perceptions.
Overall: The riding in the area is fantastic – everything you could want (big climbs, big descents, technical singletrack) and a fantastic climate. An expert guide like David allows you to get the best from your visit – without the hassle of trying to arrange transport or the risk of getting lost. The week’s programme (currently £250 per person) is great value and will give you a great taste of the area – which will have you coming back for more. 2005 will (hopefully) see my fifth visit to the area, which says it all really.
Strengths: The obvious strength is the area – fantastic trails, big mountains and great weather. It is also very convenient – 2 hours drive from Malaga – and very good value. Before our first trip we were worried because it seemed too cheap.
Weaknesses: Orgiva isn’t the prettiest of towns, but then it does have plenty of bars and restaurants – so some may prefer to somewhere more attractive, but more isolated.
Overall: We had a great holiday, and came back the next year. The fact we could book the cortijo and then hire David (the guide and owner if Biking Andalucia) on a day to day basis worked well for our mixed group of cyclists and non-cyclists.
That said, as soon family commitment allow, I want to come back and do the high altitude programme.
Strengths: David, your amenable host, has a great knowledge of the area - he's been there longer than most. He's flexible and will give you whatever mix of Sierra Nevada classic rides and newly-discovered local tracks you prefer. The cortijo 'El Olivo' is a gem: nice self-contained accomodation situated in an olive grove with a terrace under the vines, BBQ and beautiful swimming pool. That's hard to beat.. And the lunchtime sarnies are great!
Weaknesses: Spanish plumbing - that's about it.
Overall: Orgiva has a great location for Sierra Nevada cycling as it's at the bottom of many superb descents: climb in the morning (or take an uplift if you prefer) to earn the descent back to base. Then sit and enjoy a few beers and tapas in an Orgiva bar and give a cheery wave to other MTBers as they start the long haul back up the hot tarmac to their bases. Then it's back to 'El Olivo' for a swim and a relax on the terrace, followed perhaps by a BBQ or a visit to a restaurant. And repeat.. A great week - we'll be back for the third time next year.
Overall: the riding is superb, David will plan the riding around your needs and make it as long/short, technical/easy as you want. Don't miss a trip up-to the Refugio. The descent is sublime. I will be going for the third year next year and each time more people want to come. book now. But don't tell anyone. It's too good to share...
