Strengths: Such-and-such mm thickness cable surrounded by whatever mm thickness metal shells. There's lots of numbers involved, but basically it's a very, very strong lock that's tricky for thieves to tackle with either cutters or a saw. The genius locking mechanism is drill-, pick- and freeze-attack-resistant. It's long enough to get round even the fattest street furniture and your frame and wheels (front wheel removed). You can carry it around your waist!
Weaknesses: ... but you have to have the right size waist. You need 33" inch hips or it slips off. I don't know how all those skinny couriers (they all use this lock) do it. I sling mine over my shoulder (for that "'ard" look) but other than that it is a bit annoying to cart around.
Overall: A great lock no matter where you live. The toughness of a D-lock with the convenience of a cable. London's entire courier population can't be wrong!
Strengths: Yes, it is a good alternative to a d-lock. Yes, it is easy to carry and doesn't knock around on the bike
Weaknesses: I relied on this instead of a d-lock and found out to my cost that the scrotes that nicked my bike only needed a set of bolt croppers. They were even caught on cctv. So have one by all means but don't rely on it!
Strengths: strong, makers seem to have thought of everything, is a recommended lock by most insurers, isn't a D lock so you get some flexibility.
comes in 2 lengths, 80 and 100
Weaknesses: bit on the heavy side
Overall: I needed a lock for my insurance (E&L) and this comes as one of the highest rating locks there is (gold), i was only required a silver level lock but being as this works out a very similar price i went for the extra security and got this one.
the back of the packaging, and a lot of the front is full of recommendations by various companies and security bodies etc... it scores full marks in all tests listed (10/10) apart from one which it scored 9.
Although i obviously havent tried to steal a bike locked up with this lock im sure that it'll take a hell of a lot of abuse and the various different layers will make it extremely hard to get through.
if you are buying it make sure you get the granite one i think i remember seeing some cheaper ones that presumably are not as strong and did not have granite in their name.
