Strengths: Mike is a great host. Riding is epic, only ever saw the people we were riding with. Guides were fantastic and excellent riders
Weaknesses: I'm not a bike fan of Spanish food, but thats hardly Mike's fault. Can't live there, cos my wife would kill me.
Overall: We are booking for next year, so I think it says it all. its just about the trails, not what kit you have or how big you can get air. The trails are truely epic and nobody else is on them. Everyone connected to switchbacks is very friendly and has time to help improve your riding. Accomudation was really nice, had a villa to ourselves.
Strengths: Great location, awesome riding, challenging.
[Update 26/06/08] Just wanted to say that i had the most amazing week at switch-backs. I have to admit that for the first few days i realised that i was not as 'intermediate' as i had thought and feared for my life at many points on the track! I began to realise that maybe girls should not go on mountain bike holidays!! BUT, i am pleased to say that i did survive and it was a great experience. Bubion is beautiful and the people were all really friendly. Mike and Brian were great coaches and i know that all the time when i ride at home, i can now hear, "BUM BACK!"... repeatedly! I would recommend anyone who loves mountain biking to try Switch-backs. You will want to go again and again. And probably decide that you need a new bike too!!!
Strengths: Great adrenaline from these trails! Great guides, superb setup & organisation with full workshop and a van to meet us at the pub everyday at the bottom of the descents - always much lower than you started out from. Great value for money. Have I said great enough yet?
[Update 11/02/08] Try & pick a weakness. Switchbacks is run by riders who know what a riding holiday should be.
Weaknesses: Weather was bizzarely shit - riding in a couple of inches of snow was kinda funny, though, but it did get warm enough to leave a stripy sunburn pattern on my forehead through my helmet. TAKE EAR PLUGS! If you don't you'll soon find out why I told you to.
[Update 11/02/08] Honestly, my ability. Which has improved drastically thanks to pointers from Mike & his guides - but there's always room for a bit more improvement.
Overall: SHITHOT! Can't wait to go back. The instruction I received has made me a soooo much better rider. I read a review here from last April that said that Mike had broken his hand, funnily it's broken this April too. Either the altitude prevents it from healing or Mike and the other guides are the kinda guys who are 'up for it' and love to ride - occaisionally pushing their limits just for fun. I think it's the latter. Not wanting to put anyone off here, there's no reason to do anything you're not happy with - there are always alternatives, but it encourages people like me give it a go, learn and improve, thus enhancing the experience. Now I'm back home I see every wall as something to be ridden off - 4 feet high and rising....
[Update 11/02/08] Went for my 2nd trip away with SBs last week and can't believe it took me sooo long to return there (10 months). Van assists with easy climbs to warm up leading to some of the best trails in the world in 20 degree heat whilst Britain languishes in rain & mud can't be beat. Guides, accomodation, organisation and most importantly the riding are fantastic and I'm going back again at the end of March cos I can't get enough of it!!!! Trying out SBs DH next time as even though I don't mind earning my descents the idea of 0 feet climbing & 1000s of feet descending definately appeals so I can session the same trail a few times in a row and get it nailed. If you want to up your game and improve technique, speed etc. this is the place to do it; if you want to bimble along at your own pace, however, the scenery is phenomenal so everyone wins.
Strengths: Mike's motivational skills, Robin's dry humour, but the trails top the list.
Weaknesses: Makes the home trails look pants.
Overall: If you want to become a better rider book a place. Mike will have you doing daft things on the first day, and then it all goes downhill (in a good way). Would I go back... definately.
Strengths: high quality/high quantity trails, spot on guides, something for riders of all abilities
Weaknesses: the fact i can't be there all the time!
Overall: just come back from a week with s/b's and i have to say it was one of the sweetest weeks of my life.simply fantastic trails, great friendly guides who can dish out top advice if needed.if you like to ride mountainbikes you need to get out here at least once in your life.for myself once will not be enough,i'm going back for sure!
Strengths: Perfect! Flowing and endless amounts of virgin singletrack. Mike's coaching was terrific - I went out feeling I was just ok on my bike and came back riding drops, technical rock gardens and switchbacks - lots and lots of switchbacks all in a week!:)
Weaknesses: Nada. Sun shone 17C everyday and not a cloud in the sky - I even got a tan.
Overall: A truly fantastic week on a bike. Already booked again with a group of friends for June and can hardly wait.
Strengths: Amazing holiday - full on technical freeride trails, excellent guiding from Mike and Robin, perfect weather and breathtaking views. Switchbacks let you experience trails with a HUGE grin factor. I've been to Whistler bike park, West BC and the South of France and this is by far the best riding I have ever ridden. A nice mix of XC and DH combined but manageable for any rider of any technical capability or speed.
Weaknesses: None! need 3 more weeks to do more... Maybe I should move out there.
Overall: Can't wait to get back out there and do more of those wonderful natural trails. Haven't found trails like this anywhere else.
Strengths: Mike Saunders (frozen Yank), he's the key to the success of Switchbacks, great communicator and teacher.
Weaknesses: 53 year old legs !!
Overall: Great week and was tailored to our needs, enjoyed it so much we have booked for another week in October. Abject terror - the climb/push to the top is a killer but the descent is to die for, (if fall off to the left thats probably whats gonna happen) Try and nail the guides on the climbs if you dare !!
