Overall: Assembly uses different thicknesses of washers to take up play or reduce binding.Mine developed play after 5 months and no variation of washers either took up the play or stopped the binding. After 4 hours of trial and error fitted my XT cranks in 5 minutes with no binding or play.Look up these cranks on mtbr.com and see what other buyers say.Would not buy these even if they were 50quid.
Overall: After three months the bb bearings went first they were stiff then they siezed up. bought a new one replaced it ,it started to go stiff so i spent some time to find the problem, then went to problem solving in the instructions, which say if the cranks are tight change preload washer with smaller(suplied)one problem solved always read instructions carefully first or get properly installed
Weaknesses: Low quality of chain rings, low quality of bolts, low quality of chainset & BB.
Overall: This chainset lasted only three months on my fully. First, the bolts on the granny ring gave up and fell off the bike while riding. Then the middle ring lost a tooth w. no abuse and no crash. After change of chain rings the chainset began to go loose. I tried everything, incl. Loctite, but to no avail. I gave up when, finally, the bearings in the drive side died after just three months of riding. I have no confidence in this design any longer. It seems semi-stupid to fasten the chainset on the side of bearings with plastic side walls.
Overall: Very impressive. The new X system is easy to set-up, my chainline is spot on, no flex in the arms, extremely stiff, light - and have been running the cranks for about 8 months now with no bearing issues. Mighty pleased I bought these!
Strengths: Strong, stiff, very light and very trick looking in black. Quality relaceable Race Face rings.
Weaknesses: None. had mine fitted (for free) by LBS so cannot comment on that.
Overall: A quality alternative to XTR. Very light weight with the new style (Hollowtech type) fixtures. Crank arms are hollowed out but are still exceptionally stiff. No flex at all when fitted. They are very good looking in black and the finish is first class. We all know RF make good quality rings and they shift every bit as good as Shimano. Mine is used with a Sachs chain and they work perfectly together. Take a good look at this model if contemplating the XTR set. It certainly looks better and if reports are true the rings will last much longer.
Strengths: It looks very good and goes together well seeming to be well made and pretty idiot proof to install. I am quite impressed so far but have only ridden down the road with it so far.
Weaknesses: There was no Bottom bracket with mine but they sent if straight away. With a 68mm BB shell there are 7.5mm worth of spacers blocking the bearings out to the sides of the bottom bracket, 5mm drive side, 2.5mm none drive. Price is a bit steep but it did have to be done really.
Overall: I have not used it in anger yet but it has to be an improvement on Isis and I looks great. I will be using it in Wales this week and will report back in a month or so.
Strengths: Almost everything - weight, looks, bearing quality, build tolerances
Weaknesses: Finish has gone a bit funny on my polished ones over the winter - suspect some brasso might shift it though!
Overall: Had to write this to contradict what sounds like a very unreasonable review of these elsewhere on this page! I have been mountain biking for 17 years, and have rideen cranks from more brands than I care to remember! These have proven utterly reliable through the darkest and grittiest winter of riding I have done for years. They have shown absolutely no sign of undue wear, looseness or bolt problems. Maybe the other reviewer here has some maintenance issues causing his problems - you can't expect the most stressed components of your bike to continue to do their job if you neglect to keep stuff clean and well loved in the winter... Anyhow - I love them, and think they represent good value compared with cheese-ringed Shi*mano cranks my mates have watched rapidly diintegrate for similar money!
'SWEET CRANKS - NOT CHEAP, BUT OVERALL, VERY GOOD VALUE'
Strengths: Lightweight, stiff. blinging cranks
Weaknesses: NNot cheap but probably forgiveable
Overall: Had so many issues with Hollowtech II cranks I was desperate for some decent cranks. Have used Race Face cranks on and off for years and never had problems with them, so decided to take the plunge with the Deus cranks for my new XC rig. A little fiddly to fit initially, but have had these for about seven months now and am well impressed. Light, shifting is as good as Shimano, rings are still as good as new and look like they will last for a few years yet. Look awesome, and are super stiff too. Impressive.
Strengths: Used them for about nine months so far with no problems - the XT jobbies I sold on ebay had me back in the LBS every other week! Bearing quality is much better on these, ring life is ten times the big S and they look awesome
Weaknesses: Quality of chain rings (they wear out way too fast), weakness of chain bolts (they go loose, both on granny ring and big rings), but the worst thing: The cranks go loose. My crank set was loose after three months of XC riding and proved after several attempts (which included supergluing threads and splines) to be impossible to fix. A crank lifetime of just 5 months is ridiculous when prize is considered.
Overall: Avoid. Highly overprized product. The Deus design has specific technical and designwise flaws in the BB area.
