Weaknesses: cycling functionality and cycling accesories
Overall: Polar just took his Heart Rate Monitor and tried to add some cycling functionality. The result is unfinished untested product sold with accesories to older products.
Strengths: Polar do produce a great range of HR monitors. This is no different. The major strength is being able to see your workout in the software supplied.
Weaknesses: I'm having problems with the Cadence bit (perhaps a bit of tinkering on my part) and the altitude/temp part
Overall: Its a great product for training and you can improve your fitness using it, especially the software. Not really suited to replace a normal cycle comp.
Strengths: Computer interface. Being able to see point to point changes in altitude, heart rate and speed in the software. HRM and bike computer combined. Polar fitness test seems good, and a useful indicator of inprovement (or loss of form). Don't have to download after every session, but can store up to 99 trips/9 hours cycling at highest sampling rate (with altitude, cadence and speed turned on).
Weaknesses: Nothing serious, but I have only had it a week (four rides). Pickup from speed sensor not very powerful, but this is the first wireless computer I have had, so it may be par for the course. Bit susceptible to interference from train power lines etc.
Overall: I have used a Polar HRM for five years and find it really useful, so decided to upgrade to the S710. Easy to set up, and pretty easy to use on the go. We made a infra-red interface for a couple of quid for use with Win98, so you don't necessarily need the Polar one. The software is good, with each session being automatically entered into a training diary which gives running totals. Analysis functions useful, and you can export the data for number crunching elsewhere if you want. Got it for an upcoming trip to the Alps, so will be a good test of reliability. From what I've read, don't go for the S510 (limited data storage, poor software, no altitude which tipped it for me). Still using my Sigma computer, but both seem the same, so maybe not for much longer.
Strengths: Variable HR record times down to 5s. Waterproof, stylish, easy to use and loaded with features. Optional cadence for roadies
Weaknesses: Only sending belt back to replace battery
Overall: Easier to use and more versatile than HAC4, good computer diary and interface. Better than 510 in that you dont have to upload your file after exercise so stores them for weekly group download.
Strengths: The Amount of information available. Waterproof. Downloadable. Fitness test.
Weaknesses: Conversely, the amount of info available means that its a hell of a job remembering which buttons do what (other than the basics), or is it me????
Overall: Well worth what initially looked like an astronomical price. The downloadable information (and the fact that it stores up to 99 sets) is a real bonus.
Strengths: masses of functions, clear display when on bike, very useful software, quick access to info
Weaknesses: price? shows how unfit i am on the climbs!
Overall: I used to have an m52, but after forgetting to take it off when playing rugby i needed another!! Chose the s720 over the 710 as it has a steel face, and i don't regret the price paid - has reinvigorated my training regime, easy to use, pretty intuitive. You need a hr computer this is the one.
Strengths: This HRM has everything. The ability to sit down after a 6 hour ride and study the route profile and Heart Rate up the climbs is brilliant. The Monitor is robust and accurate. Polar customer service is excellant too. Whne my battery ran out I was not looking forward to sending to watch away as I use it every day. However the Monitor was back in 3 days! Amazing turn round.
Weaknesses: Some people have mentioned the price. I find this astounding. This is a wireless Cycle computer, a Very Good Heart Rate Monitor and an Altimeter which can store all that data for PC download with all softeware included. Bargain of the century.Maybe a bigger display could improve things.
Overall: Don't even think about buying a £100 monitor when for £80 more you can have absolutely everything. I will not get on my bike or do any exercise without it.
