Strengths: Product tests, advice on health, buying and selling. Shows that with less then £300 you can get a decent MTB and start trailblazing
Weaknesses: Less ads more Gear/product/trail testing.
Overall: A good mag, so good in fact I took out a subscription, that and the fact there was a pair of Shimano SPD's as a free gift!. Caters for all levels.
Strengths: Does reviews of anything bike related, no matter the make.
Weaknesses: Some of the riding techniques in the 'techniques' section are a little obvious (keep your weight behind the bike on a steep hill type thing).
Overall: Good for the average rider who likes to go out and ride round the woods.
Strengths: Where would I be without this magazine. Decided I wanted to get into mountain biking, picked this up in smiths cos it seemed to be the only one not aimed at teenagers (tho Im a teenager myself LOL) and was instantly hooked. It provides a good balance of kit reviews some rides for every level (tho none in my area) and techniques. All this adds up to make it excellent for a beginner like myself. What they write is easy for me to understand without being patronising. Ive learnt so much from just 2 editions.
The reviews are balanced, there is some info on races and riders (so I can dream).
No OTT travel trips either
Realistic about gear, realises that we don't all want lycra shorts, or have £100s to spend on components and gear, or £1000 to buy a pucka full susser.
Weaknesses: Only quaterly Expensive
Overall: Great magazine, the best out there for XC purists like myself, do you want to see kids jumping in car parks? No, then get this mag, it is excellent. How many magazines review £300 starter bikes and £2000 full sussers in the same issue without being snobbish about one and calling people who ride the others pimpy poseurs? This one!!
Strengths: handy little mag, small enough to role up and put in your pocket....reviews everyday bikes not just £2000 dream bikes
Weaknesses: £3.75.... I say again £3.75...... this money could build a small towerblock in africa
Overall: enjoyed this mag but made sure that I read every last bit of it due to price tag...even read the 'would like to meet' colomns... oh...or was that another mag
Strengths: Reads as if written by enthusiasts who know their stuff. Tests bikes costing £300 as thoroughly and seriously as those costing £2k. Well designed, employs good photographers.
Weaknesses: Some sections poorly written. Needs more thorough sub-editing to improve sometimes wonky sentence construction and eliminate spelling mistakes. Tests let down by inaccurate pricing and other errors. 'Trail advice' section seems to be written as a (feeble) joke.
Overall: More grown-up read than MBR. Genuinely tries to appeal to riders at all levels. More care and skill invested in on-page editing and fact-checking would vastly improve its quality.
Strengths: most of it, listing at back is good, esp. with contact numbers of manufacturers
Weaknesses: few and far between, just needs more pages filled with words...not adverts.
Overall: Impartial reviews that dont mock the cheaper bikes around £300,400,500... informative about kit and useful tips through out. this bike mag is aimed at kit and reviewing it seriously, and its good to see its developed from its 4 issues a year start and made room for some trail riding info too, good stuff. down side is the price going up to match competitors!
Strengths: Written in proper English. Guy Kesteven's articles are usually the best and most interesting. I actually look forward to it dropping on the doormat!
Weaknesses: That stupid pointless half-baked buyers guide STILL takes up half the mag. Reviews tend to be inconsistent, both between sucessive WMB mags and across the whole Future Publishing (MBUK, C+) portfolio. Component reviews not comprehensive enough, often miss out important products or snippets of info (but all mags are guilty of this) Why does What MOUNTAIN Bike insist on reviewing hybrids, tourers, kids bikes...?
Overall: Not cliquey and wishy-washy like Singletrack, not narrow-minded and condescending like MBR, not a bike-centred lad mag like MBUK, but... well what, exactly?
Within the four main UK MTB mags is one really good mag trying to get out.
Weaknesses: The buyers guide is useless.Takes up too much room and the script is too small. I know this is a contadiction, but why not have the guide as an insert every 6 months.
Overall: Not a bad attempt from Future. Not worth subscribing for but OK as a now and again read.
