Strengths: Grip the bars fine - no slip so long as you bear down hard on the allen keys (use a decent quality tool to avoid stripping the bolt heads). Easy to install & remove. That's it.
Weaknesses: None. Initially more expensive, but should work out cheaper for me in the long run - not the case if you only have one bike though.
Overall: I've been running a test set of these for a month now, and like them. No grips should slip if they've been properly installed - the reason I bought these is because I swap stuff around between my bikes on a regular basis, and I wanted to see if they would make that easier. The answer is 'yes', and I'll be putting them on all my machines - although not with the Yeti grips, which I don't particularly like.
[Update 26/06/06] Four years down the road, and these make bike fettling so much easier I wouldn't use any other grips. I prefer the Ruffian grips. You need to grease the small hex bolts well to avoid stripping the threads, but that's a minor quibble.
Strengths: I use the odi S+M lockons for jumping, street etc. and the perform brillaintly, really comfortable grips, dont wear too quickly. The lock jaw clamps are such a good idea, absolutely brilliant. I wouldnt use anything else, this is my second pair!!
Weaknesses: bolts round if you're not careful interface with grip/collar could be better
Overall: fantastic, I will but these over and over, plus I get them for £13 inc collars! beat that! (my lbs is stupid)
Strengths: No slip. Not even a little bit. Good grip pattern (Ruffians) Good compound
Weaknesses: Price, but not that much.
Overall: I bought these after trying hairspray, spray paint, zip ties, fuse wire and even the glue from my puncture repair kit, all of which failed after a short space of time.
I got the £15.99 'all you need' 2004 kit (Ruffian grips, lock on collars, end caps) from the LBS for £13.50.
I'm glad I did. They seem hard wearing (only done 4 rides though) brilliantly simple and the lock on collars plus the supplied end cap give a nice 'mini-flange' on the end of the grip.
It took me longer to take the old grips off than to fit them - its that easy.
Don't listen to people siting rounding of the allen bolts as a negative point - only if you're a ham fisted chimp.
Buy these - they grip, they are comfortable and once fitted you can foret them until they wear out and replacement grips are on a par pricewise with normal grips.
Strengths: Easy to fit, easy to remove A grip pattern to suit everyone (I've used Yeti, Ruffian, Rogue)
Weaknesses: The grub screws that secure the lock-rings. They can fall out if you're not careful, and they're pretty soft so go easy on them!
Overall: I don't understand the bitching about the price, these jobbies are a proper fix for loose grips everywhere. The first upgrade that should go onto any bike.
Strengths: grips wont budge unless u want them to, loads of ODI and Yeti grips available to use with them, grips can be removed whenever u want without risk of damaging them or needing to use hairspray etc
Weaknesses: Seems a lot of money for grips at first
Weaknesses: The compound on mine wears off in no time...about 4 months. They click and twist slightly even when done up all the way. Anodised finish of lock-clamps wears off quick too.
Overall: These things cost the earth so why dont they do their job properly? And paying that much you would expect them to last for at least a year or so. Really, dont bother.
Weaknesses: grips (yeti) deteriorate fast, the outer collars dig into your metacarpal bones, the grip/collar intrface gets damaged too easily, they won't clamp to 24/7 steel bars
Overall: should retail together for £7 not £15. good principal, poor design execution! i'm back to normal grips and all the fun of getting them to stay on properly!
