Strengths: Easy attachment, narrow, low, well made, expedition proven over many years. Latest version has roll top waterproof bag with large volume. Tracks nicely behind bike and only minimal handling interference.
Weaknesses: Expensive. Difficult to handle when off bike. Adds considerably to length of bike. Picks up muck off back wheel of bike.
Overall: Nice trailer. Available second hand at lower prices. Too expensive at current price. Well thought out. Throws some weight back onto the bike but 2/3rds taken on the trailer wheel. I want to say that heavily laden on a solo it affects the steering unless front panniers are fitted to the bike. That's still a good idea s getting into the latest roll top bag on the trailer is awkward, so day kit (food, w/proofs etc) can be got at easier in the panniers.
Strengths: Easy attachment. Track's bike beautifully. Excellent luggage capacity. Looks so cool when attached to tandem. Off road capability.
Weaknesses: Expensive. Security clips could be lost easily. Be carefull when parking whilst heavily loaded as it can topple.
Overall: We use ours for camping/touring with our tandem and for all our shopping. It is unoticeable on the back of the tandem but handling is affected when attached to my solo. Although this is only when I am transporting a heavy load. Basically if you need to carry more, you are carrying too much already!
Strengths: Easy to fit and remove. Keeps bike much more stable than paniers. Off road capable. Roll top bag is totally waterproof (tested in Norway!). Cheack out the sealed bearings in the wheel. Above all it looks cool!
Weaknesses: Cheap!!!! Yes I mean it. Look at the price of quality paniers. An offroad capable rear rack alone costs £50 then add £80 for paniers then front rack and paniers and a bar bag. Quality items will add up to more than £240.
Overall: It will carry everything you will ever need for touring on and offroad much better than paniers (except for small light loads).
Strengths: Handles very well, surprisingly so. Cheap enough when you compare it to the cost of decent racks & panniers. Robust.
Weaknesses: Could be a problem on very rough tracks - can't comment yet as I need to test it more. Disconcerting rumbling noise from back of bike on certain road surfaces.
Overall: I'm pleasantly impressed with the Yak trailer. I've not had it long but it's been test ridden on a combination of winding minor roads, 20% (1 in 5) roads (up & down), and rough forestry tracks. Handling is great after the initial 'getting-used-to-it' period.
My plan is to use a 70 litre rucsac in the trailer rather than the bag supplied. That way I can easily put the load on my back to facilitate river crossings, get up flights of stairs, etc.
I'll post up another review in six months once I've given it more of a thrashing.
Strengths: Remember, this is for the Ibex not the yak. Tracked bike perfectly
Weaknesses: awkward off the bike and you are as long as a car when it's hooked up
Overall: Can't knock it. Only problem was very low speed up (very steep)hill, the steering got very twitchy. So I walked -no problem. Carried a 3/4 man tent as well as other kit. Went down hill at 44mph and rig stable. I would recommend disc brakes.
