Strengths: Seemed like good value at the time and there wasn't much choice when I got them.
Weaknesses: Side walls fail, as they have on all Specialized tyres that I have had. The EX version suffer more punctures than the Armadillo version.
Overall: Hard rolling/lots of vibrations. Reasonably light and capable tyre. There is better and worse to choose from. The Armadillo version has been puncture proof in my case. Basically they are Bland!
Strengths: Decent price, hard wearing, fast rolling and puncture resistant. Easy to fit and remove when you use narrow tubes with them. Fun to corner on when the road is dry and smooth. Go faster!
Weaknesses: I suppose they could be lighter, can be scary on wet manhole covers. May offend off-road purists
Overall: If you only have one bike for everything then keep your knobblies fresh for the weekend and use these on the way to work and back.
Strengths: Roll fast. Compared to knoblys. obviously. Puncture resistant. Not a single flat after about 500miles.
Weaknesses: Bumpy. But its bound to be the same with any slick. You'll feel every little bump in the road. Weight. Not as light as, say, a Conti Grand Prix ATB. But more puncture resistant, I imagine. Just a questuion of priorities really.
Overall: Great road tyre for mountain bikes. Not the lightest or fastest rolling slicks but very puncture resistant, and pumped to 80psi they feel great buzzing down a smooth road.
Weaknesses: Even for 1.5 it's too wide to be fast (the contact area with the road is very wide causing lots of lateral movement that is more consistent with an MTB tire than a road tire). Still prone to punctures.
Overall: For a faster road tire offering just as much puncture resistance I prefer a narrower tire such as a Tioga City Slicker 26*1.25/1.5 or Panaracer Pasela 26*1.25.
Strengths: I've commuted on these through central London and rural Bucks for 2 years to the tune of around 5000 miles with NO punctures. A revelation of speed compared to knobblies. Fit and forget; these wear well and just don't puncture.
Weaknesses: Being fussy, they're not as fast as the 1.0 Specialized tyres I had 6 years back, but they puctured all the time and wore way quicker.
Overall: Way fast if you're new to roadie tyes. Extremely puncture resistent. When commuting the last thing you want is a puncture - and these just don't. They could be lighter, but that would probably mean sacrificing wear and puncture resistence. Top qualty.
'Hardly worth carrying a patch kit with these on!'
Strengths: Very hard wearing and pretty near indestructable. Hardly worth carrying a patch kit with these on
Weaknesses: Not the grippiest tyre ever made, and can be a bugger to fit/remove but there had to be a compromise...
Overall: Bloody marvellous for those of us who commute everyday. If you are a weekend warrior then these are great. I ride in London and there's loads of debris from bottles and broken bus shelters, etc, but no problems with punctures running over it all at 60psi! They shed rain pretty well but I've had a couple of nervous moments when I've tried to get my knee down on fast corners (perhaps it's just my riding style?). Thinking about getting some full slicks for training, but these can't be beat for the day-to-day stuff.
Strengths: Fit and forget - last years! nearly puncture proof Can take gravel, and kerb hops etc.
Weaknesses: Bastard to get onto Bonti or Mavic rims Cant really take mud... But they arent designed for that
Overall: Great winter road tyre. Better in the rain than i thought. Incredibly difficult to get onto my mavic front and bonti rear rim. Only managed to get a puncture when i rode MtB with them.
Strengths: Great puncture protection. Cheap. Work surprisingly well on gravel. Much faster and smoother than knobbly tyres on road/gravel.
Weaknesses: Don't roll as well as a lightweight road tyre.
Overall: I have used these on a race mtb at 50psi and touring on a fully laden tandem, pumped up to 90 psi. They have never punctured or given me cause to worry about grip, even cornering at 40mph on the tandem! If you want reliable road tyres, get these.
