'cheap'

Strengths:
low price, good quality, it realy works

Weaknesses:
no enough power or inital bite

Overall:
a good allround performer that works well both wet and dry, low price and running costs(pads £10:00) make this a good brake to put on any bike.
fairly easy to set up to.

'efective 4 the money'

Strengths:
price, ease of fitting, reliable and strong rottors

Weaknesses:
disc gets contaminated easly and pads are hard to clean wen oily

Overall:
a good cheap brake upgrade power will be better with longer brake leavers or the new 2002 longer brake arms

Strengths:
price Fifty quid each end

Weaknesses:
try buying a pair of the buggers lots of hassel. top marks to active bikes in eailing though. no marks to shimano disrto center.

Overall:
worked well at coed y brenin, saved my ass a couple of times and they were only one day old and not bedded in.

'Good brakes'

Strengths:
Cheap and good

Weaknesses:
when oil gets on them they are hard to clean, aren't strong enough.

Prefer the to V brakes, but could be better

Strengths:

'HEAVY MUTHERS'

Strengths:
cheap, easy to fit, standard levers and cables

Weaknesses:
get contaminated, but nowhere near what the hydraulic version does. so be thankful!
need some grip to achieve good braking power (luckily i've got a strong grip!)

Overall:
due to heavy weight only suitable for jump bikes, have a good look at formua activa for xc use
don't have the annoying rim brake problems now (buckled wheels affecting braking and mud between pads and rims!)

'STILL WORKING - NO HASSLE'

Strengths:
Fit and forget, been on the bike for 9 months, no mucking about required. An awful lot cheaper than Hopes. Can lock up and slide 2.3" front on gravel hairpin, so enough power for me.

Weaknesses:
Not very good in the freezing cold - need to warm up a bit before they really start to work properly. Dont loose the yellow adjuster thingy, needed to adjust when pads start to wear. Hydraulic rims brakes (Magura) might be a better buy for you. (I have these on my other bike).

Overall:
Stops well, no real maintenance (so far!). Cheap.

'BETTER THAN V'S FOR NOT MUCH MORE MONEY'

Strengths:
Great wet weather stopping
Cheap
Sturdy
Easy to fit
Seem to last well (too early to be sure)
Use a standard lever

Weaknesses:
Heavy
Not very powerfull
Heavy
Cables still prone to problems with mud etc.
Heavy

Overall:
In the dry I'm not sure these are really any more powerfull than a good set of V-Brakes. But that performance doesn't drop off in the wet like V's do, and they don't wear away at the rims either. Very heavy, but then at least that makes them tough. And for the money you really can't complain.

'BARGAIN IMPROVEMENT'

Strengths:
doesn't wear the rims out
quite acceptable modulation for the price
easy to set up

Weaknesses:
as heavy as the wheel!

Overall:
a good cheap upgrade for those on a budget, better than rebuilding wheels wrecked from peak district grit
