'VERY LIGHT ,EXTREMELY VERSATILE, RIDES LIKE A DREAM! '
Strengths: Weight is unbelievable for 130mm/125mm front and rear travel. Has taken everything the Pennine and Peaks have thrown at it this winter and never missed so much as a gear change! Very comfortable bike which you can ride for hours. The three position shock lever really is useful and enables true tuning of the bike's ride on different surfaces. Get the rear shock serviced annually and it has a lifetime warranty. Fastest all day, cross country bike I've had the pleasure to ride!
Weaknesses: Hard to find any after four months of hard riding.....but here are the picky niggles! Came with jagwire sealed gear cables. Rear is fine as it's one long run. Under the bottom bracket on the front cable section runs through sleaving and was fitted with no seals at either end. After about a dozen muddy Pennine rides the cable needed stripping from the now mud clogged sleave. Bear cable round here is probably a better option! Couldn't get on with the minimalist carbon saddle. Might be light as a feather but I needed something a bit less race orientated. The rear shock does require you to play with the pressures and you need a decent pump to set it up. Once done though, the ride is superb! Not sure about the Fox Talas RLC forks as they are the only forks I have ever owned with the rebound damping in a postion where it can be accidentally altered when locking out the fork.........more a winter issue when wearing gloves! Finally, the Shimano XTR brakes came with resin pads....they cannot hack the wet. Once I changed these for metal pads they have performed fantastically. At the price, the bike should really come with metal pads as standard.
Overall: Exceptional if expensive bike which was up for grabs at end of season totally bargain price! This bike does just exactly what it is designed for I am very glad that I took the opportunity to snap it up. It climbs like a mountain goat and decends as a 5" travel bike should. The kit on it is about as good as it gets and the little niggles above can be easily rectified. Anyone buying one will get a fabulous piece of kit. Might be a bit short in the top tube length for some riders but as I prefer a more upright riding position this is a strength to me. Stand over height is quite high on all sizes (about 32" on my medium). Dual control levers and rapid rise rear mech work superbly.......I thought that this would be the thing which would put me off if anything was going to! The only thing I have marked down is "value" as the full RRP is £4000+ which is steep by anyone's standards. If you can find one on sale, like I did, it would get full marks across the board. The 2006 MC10 with SRAM X0 gears must push this bike close as the 2006 Ltd model is almost identical to this 2005 spec. Bottom line is would I purchase again? The answer is a resounding YES!
'UBER X/C RACE BIKE CAPABLE OF COPING IN THE ROUGH '
Strengths: Very light for this level of travel. Fully lock outable so can climb in an almost HT stylee. Massively discounted due to US patent law problems
Weaknesses: Tyres not the best, but soon wear out anyway.
Too gorgeous to get dirty
Overall: A bike to flatter the limited abilities of middle aged playboys like me
Strengths: Light & lockoutable; can thence climb like a hardtail but laps it up when she's going down. Bling.
Weaknesses: Price, unless you got one quick when Scott were trying to offload their 'illegal' US stock - haha suckers. Can sometimes feel a bit squishy - but that might just be me riding on a hangover
Strengths: Light weight & forgiving. It keeps getting better and better. It has taken me all summer to get the best setup and learn how best to ride it.The pro-reviews said this was a techies bike and they were right.
Weaknesses: BB height when rear shock is set for max travel. My cranks and peddles have seen some rock impacts this summer. Oh,not really the bikes fault but the Race Face BB made of Cheeeeeeease!!!
Overall: I love it. I have had a problem free summer riding all around the UK and a 2 week hol to the French Alps. It is probably not for some one who wants to set the rear shock and forget about it, but if you don't mind experimenting you can set it exactlly as soft/hard as you want it. The frame has withstood large rocks getting flung off the front wheel and the odd tumble (oops!). Definately worth putting on your short list of light weight full sussers.
