'FOR THE MONEY A GREAT BIKE THAT HAS PERFORMED WITHOUT COMPLA'
Strengths: Great SLR frame fitted with reasonable quality parts. Which are more than up to the challenge of someone new to MTBing or on a tight budget
Weaknesses: Bottom Bracket only lasted 6 months (replaced under warranty), Manitou Six forks.
Overall: Over the last 2years+, I have replaced, bottom bracket, cranks, front & rear mech, wheels, forks, head set and brakes. But don’t let this put you off, I have given this bike a seriously hard time, ridden hard most weekends, epic trips to the Lakes, Peaks, North and Sout Wales. It’s been raced, taken to SITS, Dusk till Dawn, Afan Enduro, Marin Rough ride to mention a few and not once has the bike let me down. Even when I have battered it into the ground, rivers, ditches, etc.
Overall the bike has out performed many of my mates bikes, with bullet proof reliability whilst putting up with at time appalling riding. Choose a line any line…
If you are new to MTBing or on a tight budget and are prepared to upgrade everything as they were out to flatter a terrific frame. Buy one.
Weaknesses: Saddle-Cheap brand brakes and acera front mech. Frame v stiff, loosens fillings.(but I like it anyway) Judy C's poor paint finish (but whole fork replaced under warranty)
Overall: 3yrs Old, now with Pace forks and a respray it's a whole new bike again. Not likely to change simply due to the quality of frame.
Strengths: The frame is soooo excellent. Very light, and tough as hell, color (orange dragonfly) is just beautiful. The wheelset, especially the hubs, Judy C
Weaknesses: Heavy fork, some no-name parts, Crank (Alivio), no riser bar, some components aren't great for freeride.
Overall: I bought this bike just for the frame, and it was a great choice. I am into freeride, but no problem at all. I changed all on the bike, execpt shifters, front derailleur (!!!) and rear hub, because the other parts wouldn't have taken all the abuse. I run it now with a Psylo SL. It's just so great. I would have kept the wheelset, but I wanted disc (Hayes)...
Strengths: The WSD version was got for Amanda after a string of uncomfortable bikes. She has suddenly found the joys of cycling again and I can even get her out in most weathers. This is more down to the bike than anything else.
Weaknesses: A bit heavy still, and Amanda still didn't get on with the sadel. Spec of bike we got was different to one advertised. Trek seemed to change specs halfway through last year.
Overall: The best bike Amanda has ever owned. She loves it and she says it is sooo comfortable. It may be traded in this year though - for another Trek - a Fuel WSD. We don't think we will look at another brand for her.
Weaknesses: Wheels didn`t stay true for long.Pedals seized in two weeks.
Overall: After riding this bike for nearly twelve months,I have to say it was worth the money I spent.I rode around in the muddiest and stoniest conditions for nearly a year - the only real problems I had were the pedals(which I soon changed for SPDs).The wheels were not brilliant but then I am 14 stone and didn`t go lightly on them. The drive train components all lasted and worked. The forks were excellent, even with hardly any maintenance. So overall a good value for money bike, that will do everything you want.
Overall: I'm not really the most experienced person but I do own one of these and can compare to other bikes I've ridden (Rocky Mountain Hammer Race w/ Indy c's regularly, rode onna Santa Cruz Heckler once). The bike is nice and light, no problems at all throwing it around. Surprisingly stiff for an aluminium frame, yet coupled with the Judy fork it's a very comfortable ride, more so than the RM. I do desecrate it by using it to commute to work occasionally (i.e. in summer when it's warm!), and it's stood up fine to road work as well as being good off-road. Get New pedals, new brakes, new stem (in that order) and you're off to a good start, at a price that won't break the bank - especially if you shop around.
Strengths: Frame, Bontrager components, Treks reliable customer servive (in my experience), Disc mounts.
Weaknesses: Pedals, brakes, also its not exactely designed for British winters.
Overall: After riding this bike for over a year I've only had minor problems. Internal seals went on the fork and they where replaced quickly for free. The pedals are a weak point and I replaced these with a set of Times. The bontrager groupset is pragmatic and reliable although not quite as good as the top line Shimano, Race Face etc. The brakes are a little flexy and next on the list to be replaced for some Hope Minis. Also mud clearances are not great. I would recommend this bike without hesitation over similarly price competitors in my opinion, and opinions are like arseholes, everyone got one and most of them stink.
Strengths: Excellent quality mountain bike, well specced, brushed aluminium frame, with an unusual design of frame tube forming - a talking point if you are into metal forming - goes from circular to larger size flattened elipse. Good quality welding. Very good shimano hydraulic brakes, much superior to cable or v brakes. Comfortable saddle, and grips, excellent balance, and climbing ability. Good sized frame, 19.5 for me 6.3 but tyres a bit on the big size but they dont half grip in the mud and on loose pack.
Weaknesses: V-shapped seat gives you a wet arse in the wet. Seat pillar scratches easily in down tube, seat clamp needs to be tight to stop seat pillar slipping down. Not that light but you don't need to carry it much as its a good climber.
Overall: as above BUY -BUY -BUY.A REALLY GOOD BIKE WELL BALANCED, STRONG , GOOD COLOUR SCHEME ,GOOD CLIMBER, NICE SPEC ,CHANGE THE SEAT FOR WINTER RIDES.VIRTUALLY NO FAULTS.
