[Update 13/11/07] As before, but now have ridden the sealed bearings for 9 months in all conditions and not a single hint of wear or sticking. Very Stiff.
Weaknesses: Paint, Not for beginners, needs concentration
[Update 13/11/07] Paint, not a beginners bike and demands your best.
Overall: I changed this bike froim A trek liquid, and after 3 rides took it to wales where it outperformed everyone (including me). Its fast, reacts real fast to turn in, floats over lips and small drop offs, yet climbs like there is no tomorrow. VPP is just SO good at rolling over rocks/roots etc even on steep ups. This bike rocks, and I'm looking forward to getting the real benefit on the summer single track. Note though, its like driving a ferrari - common sense will have it flying, but beginners will find it scary as it reacts so fast it could be seen as twitchy. Get the 06 sealed bearings.
[Update 13/11/07] Have now stuck some coil Pike's (454's) on the front and this bike is absolutely on RAILS around single track bends. On all rides I can noticeably catch up to the man in front with better grip in the bends (and their riding good bikes, Ventana's Marins, Spech's, Hecklers) and on ups its the same. Its only my own head and fitness that stops it being faster on the downs. You will not regret buying this bike.
Strengths: Incredible build quality and strong. The geometry is spot on for fast hard riding up or downhill. The VPP system is fantastic and I know it works as I had a Blur. Probably the ultimate XC bike.
Weaknesses: Cost but handbuilt quality never is cheap. Mines a ball burnished so can't comment on the paint. I know there is an issue with bearings (again a VPP thing) but if that's a price to pay for the ultimate handling bike it's worth it believe me.
Overall: After riding this bike at CYB I knew it was the perfect bike, at least for me. The angles are spot on for climbing but going downhill they are fantastic. I had a Santa Cruz Blur before this and that was a lovely bike. It climbed well but I always felt over the bars when going downhill and it wasn't quite right at speed. This thing puts that right. The head angle is slightly more relaxed and givs you loads of confidence when the going gets rough at speed. The suspension works superbly over anything and it handled CYB's rocky paths with aplomb. I've got it running with Fox Vanilla RLC130's and the pair together are seventh heaven. I can put up with the bearing issue as the bike works so well. Beg steal or borrow one and get a test ride because until you do you will not know how good they really are. Believe the hype gents - it's the best!
