Weaknesses: CRITICAL PARTS ARE MADE OF PLASTIC AND ARE VERY WEAK.CONNECTION TO THE SEAT TUBE IS BY A FABRIC STRAP THAT DOES NOT HOLD THE MUDGUARD ANYWHERE NEAR AS TIGHT AS YOU NEED TO GO OFF ROAD.MUDGUARD MOVED OUT OF POSITION ON A CANAL TOWPATH !!!!.
Overall: USELESS CONNECTION WHICH ALLOWS THE GUARD TO MOVE AND BOUNCE EVRYWHERE.JUST WASTED MY MONEY ON A MUDGUARD THAT DOES NOT GUARD AGAINST MUD!!!!
Strengths: Slightly better than no mudguard at all. Quite good the way the wee flaps at the front and back can be angled round the wheel.
Weaknesses: Seatpost attachment very fiddly to fit, and not secure enough to keep the thing in position over the back wheel. This, combined with its size, means your foot catches it and knocks it off at a jaunty non-mud catching angle almost every time you swing your foot over the bike.
Overall: Back to the drawing board, Topeak. If I had a penny for every time someone shouted: "Your mudguard's squinty", I would probably have enough money to buy a Crud Guard Race.
Strengths: Good design of guard - long, bulges in the right place and has a joint to give max coverage of the wheel.
Weaknesses: All the above are rendered useless by the attachment. It doesn't hold the guard tigh when its not broken and is weak in several places so will break sooner rather than later...
Strengths: Wide and adjustable height and front flap work well
Weaknesses: Guard twists around the steat post because the attachment is not strong enough
Overall: Ditch the strap and buckle and replace with a Jubilee Clip (ie radiator hose screw clip). Cut two 50mm lengths of old inner tube, double up and slip onto the seat post. Screw on to inner tube covered portion of the seat post. Work brilliantly!
Strengths: It is so easy to detatch for those mud-free days. All you need is a little finger strength!
Weaknesses: If you're a bit weak in the hand department, it will be hard to put on. You also need to put it on slightly offset, as it pulls to one side when you close the catch.
Overall: It's a great product, despite what the others say. You just need to adjust it properly before you fit it, so that the nylon band is really tight when you close up the catch.
I can imagine that the more hamfisted biker might snap the little catch closures quite quickly, but if you look after it, it'll serve you well.
If you're throwing the bike about a bit on the trail, it does occasionally go a bit 10 to 2, but I used to get that with a bolt Crud Catcher. Just learn to kick it back into place with a free foot!
