Weaknesses: er, dont wash themselves? front pockets not much use (but the side ones are)
Overall: great shorts. they do everything you'd expect, like be comfortable and not fall to bits, plus they have the added bonus of looking like normal shorts. Off the bike it doesnt look like you've shat yourself, which is nice.
Weaknesses: strange cut of material side pockets a bit "flappy" when compared to my lusso blackholes
Overall: nice pair of shorts let down imo by a strange cut , they were fine around the waist but they have a low crutch and straight leg cut meaning i now have a split in the outer material in the crutch , definatly not for people with larger thighs
Strengths: they don't look like lycra and they have pockets.
Weaknesses: they're not as comfy as lycra and they move about a bit as you ride.
Overall: I've swapped over to these after commuting in lycra for a while. They look good and are pretty comfy. They are not as comfy as lycra. the legs move up and down a bit as you ride. But they have added benefits such as side pockets which are pretty handy. Overall I'm sticking with them and not going back to the lycra which says it all.
Strengths: The material feels fit for purpose, strong, and robust. The fit of the shorts is excellent - I used to be a lycra fan until my kids reached teenage, and started refusing to come out with me if I wore lycra, so I decided to investigate a pair of baggies. Tried a few different brands at a local bike shop, and these were the ones that as soon as I put them on I said yep they're the ones. Very comfortable, don't appear to need to wear anything underneath. The pad is good, and feels good on the bike.
Weaknesses: None yet. I've heard people say that baggies don't get rid of heat as effectively as lycra, so I've yet to discover how hot you get in them, but at least I don't look like I'm wearing a nappy from the back.
Overall: Very pleased with these - although I'm still going to be wearing brushed lycra tights for chillier days.
Weaknesses: They don't fit people with XC riders thighs...
Overall: The quality and features are unmatched for the price but...
I have split the crotch on two pairs during the first ride due to the strange fit of these shorts. 3" spare on the waist but not enough room to allow adequate movement on the bike during technical bits.
These shorts promised so much but delivered so little, sorry Altura but change the fit.
Strengths: comfortable when in the saddle. Look good. Wife allows me out in them- she thinks men should never wear lycra!
Weaknesses: Cut a little odd not exactly baggy Lycra inner seems to be as large as the outer
Overall: These shorts look good and are pretty comfortable, most of the time. They do seem to have a very high waist that is larger than the given size and the lycra inner is as large as the outer shell, this means they ride down when you get out of the saddle, especially when its hot as the saddle pad seems to absorb sweat and get heavy. OK, you could say "get a smaller size" but the thighs are tight on me and I don't have the thighs of a XC racer! If they improved the cut of these they'd be fantastic as they are good looking and very comfortable while you're in the saddle. Maybe making the lycra inner short smaller than the outer would help!
Strengths: Look good, Nice features - zip pockets etc.
Weaknesses: Don't fit me at all, small is far too large where usually small it about right or a smidgin too small. Padding it nowhere near where it should be - this prolly due to it being too big, but the padding covers my crotch but not my arse, so i'm sitting on the saddle with nothing but the fabric in between.
Overall: Perhaps it unfair as I should have swapped them for a pair of XS, but I don't get on with them at all. The Perl Isumi Mesa's (size S) fit me perfectly, are the same price, and IMO look better, but don't have the features Which the altitude have. I don't think i'll get another pair of these.
Strengths: Good looking pair of baggies, adjustable tightness on the thighs and a few pockets
Weaknesses: Everything else, the waistband is too large and not adjustable enough (I'm no skinny XC racer either), they ride dwon at the back giving your following mates a nice view of your arse crack and the internal padded short is terrible. I echo some of the other views in that you get a lot of padding around your gonads - great for posing off the bike - but usually all that comes between my arse and the saddle is a thin bit of nylon, add some muddy water and the chafing has to be seen to be believed. I think the problem is due to the inner short only being attached at the waistband and hem, so it "floats", that and the padding being poorly located.
Overall: I spent £40 on these shorts which is a lot, they're very uncomfortable and if anyone from Altura reads this I'd like my money back. They're very much form over function, which, where my arse is concerned is unacceptable. The only way I can see me using these shorts in the future is to cut out the inner short and wear a padded liner. My Nema's on the other hand are excellent, buy them instead
