Strengths: TOP SPECS. GOOD UP GRADES. LIGHT EVEN THOUGH STEEL. SOAKES UP THE TRAILS AND HANDLE ALL WITH PASSION
Weaknesses: COST.. TOP END .. (WORTH IT)
Overall: ONE HOT BIT OF KIT JUST GOT MINE IN ELECTRIC BLUE WITH UPGRADE ON HEADSET AND PERFORMANCE PACK .. A DELIIGHT TO RIDE AND PUSHING IT TO THE EXTREME AND STILL GOING WOULD NOT BE WITHOUT .. SO TO EVERY ONE THINKING OF THE SPECIAL HARDTAIL THIS IS THE ONE AND MORE SO GO AND GET ONE IF YOU CAN ..
'THROW BACK TO A BY-GONE AGE WHEN ONE BIKE DID IT ALL...'
Strengths: Solid as a rock, climbs like a mountain goat, great response, delivers a really confident ride whatever the conditions or the type of riding.. The wishbone rear seat-stays deliver a tight rear end as well, so power tranfer is scary, and even V brake's stop you on the spot.
[Update 20/04/08] Since my original review I've added a Reba Team, Juicy 5's and Mavic Cross lands, plus all kinds of other new kit. In fact, other than the frame the only original parts are the front mech and WTB Rocket 5 saddle (best saddle ever maded by the way). All this has made me enjoy the frame more, I also went for my first foray into full sus with a Stumpy FSR which I love, but the P7 just waits to be taken out to show what she can do all over again. This frame/bike is that good. I completed my first Marathon 100k last weekend, the toss up between the FSR and the P7 was a tough one but the all round ability of the P7 won through. In fact I'm about to go for it again and upgrade to Hope Mono Minis, Hope wheelset and a F100 fork.
Weaknesses: Mine had the old Manitou Axel fork fitted as standard, which was a dog. I've now changed to a Kona Project 2 to go fully rigid until I can afford a better replacement. Even going fully rigid I can't stop grinning when out on the trails.. it's like a whippet..
[Update 20/04/08] Don't know how long I can go before I need to move on to the new frame, mine is 5-6 years old now, so am restricted on fork length. Could argue it's a touch heavy but the ride feel makes up for that. Chain suck is never good on a steel frame either so need to keep a close eye out for an onset of rust, nothing yet though... Also wish I could get rid of the Canti bosses on the seat stays... and on that topic the rear disc has caught the chain stay once or twice. That said, it's nothing that would put me off another one though.
Overall: Having started out on a '92 Clockwork and loved Orange ever since I have to give them 10/10 now I've changed the fork.. can;t wait to see how it feels with a decent 120mm fork fitted..
[Update 20/04/08] I still love this bike, and it will always draw more attention than the FSR... Sure the FSR can hammer down techy trails but the P7 is the better all rounder, even considering comfort, for me.
Strengths: The steel frame that handles like a dream. Hope Hubs. I upgraded to Hope Mini Mono's and the Hope pack (headset, skewers and seat clamp). Looks amazing in white. The ride is absolutely amazing and keeps up with 5-6 inch suspension bikes at Glentress and leaves them for dead on the climbs.
Weaknesses: The standard tyres on the 2008 model are Continental Speed Kings, they will be amazing on dry hardpack but are rubbish on wet trails and northshore as have no grip
Overall: Delighted with the bike is all I can say, have had for a month now and it gets you out riding on wet or snowy nights and makes you glad you went out.
Strengths: Superb frame, Fox Vanilla forks (RLCs), great spec, comfort, bang-on geometry for a do-it-all bike.
[Update 15/02/08] Lovely geometry. Lovely steel frame. Good pedal/bottom bracket clearance. Gorgeous Fox Float RLC forks.
Weaknesses: Trying to get my hands on one! High demand meant trying to get any discount off retail price was not easy.
[Update 15/02/08] 7 months in and the headset is fit for the bin, the bottom bracket is making strange noises (no discernable freeplay though)and the stickers are peeling off the frame!! I wrote a polite letter to Orange and to date have had no response from their customer services dept - absolutely disgusting treatment IMHO. Whats the point in fitting substandard components on a bike that costs over a grand?? INSANITY!
Overall: I got the biking bug after buying an entry level Specialized hardtail and riding it into the ground through all weathers and conditions. The appeal of a more supple steel frame was the primary reason for me choosing the P7. The other alternative was the Genesis Altitude but the spec wasn't as good. I am so pleased I chose the Orange. Its an absolute pleasure to get out and clock up some miles. I generally do about 15 - 20 miles every ride. This includes some lung busting climbing through the forestry here in S.Wales. As you would expect, it outclasses the old bike in every way, but its the sheer speed downhills that was the big shock. It flies along, and thanks to the cro-mo frame, my dental fillings no longer feel like they're about to be shaken loose! I've had no problems on the climbs and any concerns about laidback geometry affecting steering abilities have been put to bed - even zipping down really fast single tracks has been fuss-free. My old bike is now used for work/commuting and virtually every aspect of riding it seems a chore by comparison. I really took my time in choosing this bike - £1200 is a lot of cash to a tight wad like me - But I must say I have absolutly no regrets whatsoever. I climb on, start pedalling and just marvel at its comfort and bomb-proof quality. It sounds crazy to say a bike has character, but this one really has. All in all £1200 now seems like a decent price to pay such a good bike.
[Update 15/02/08] Customer satisfaction is obviously not on the list of priorities for this company. I'm both upset and annoyed that I find myself writing this review. Orange customers services dept are a disgrace to the Union Jack sticker thats peeling off the frame! Ive replaced the plasticine WTB headset with a Chris King unit and the worn bottom bracket was replaced fuss-free by my LBS under warranty (Thanks Andy, Sunset Bikes)
Strengths: Good spec, nice fork and plush, nice stiff Raceface cranks, fantastic steel frame, comfortable and stable, nice laidback geometry, feels bombproof, great wheelset, got mine in matt black, looks great.spot on riding position which feels commanding, feels durable and well made, good paint finish.Descends brilliantly and climbs ok given that it has slackish angles.
[Update 21/01/08] Very nice bike to ride, has a laidback feel, nice for long rides as its a comfortable steel frame, good all round trial bike, especially good down hill and it climbs ok,perfectly adequate, the fork has been excellent too, plush and tracks very well,I have now fitted the softest spring which has improved it i think and I never run out of travel.Excellent wheelset and Hope hubs.Good spec generally, excellent XT shifters,i fitted Hope 06 mini's,well engineered but the juicy 5's are a bit more powerful but dont look as nice, just an opinion.
Weaknesses: None really but fork probably has 20mm too much travel for a hardtail trail bike and can't adjust travel down like previous vanilla's,run a softer spring(£30 from mo jo) as it comes with a firm one(too firm for my 12 stones) and use a lot of sag which drops it 25 to 30mm its really plush then and you still have a load of travel left.Bike is a tad heavy but I've got mine under 28lb with lighter tyres ,brakes and various bits and bobs.
[Update 21/01/08] I have to say the WTB headset is pathectic, very poor quality on a £1200 bike and it started getting rough after a couple of months, sorry not good enough, recently fitted a S8 Crane Creek Cartridge headset and much better.RaceFace Evolve bottom bracket bearings are utter rubbish and dreadful durability, crap seals and a design fault which means the bearings are too tight in the cups, ive replaced with a better quality bb but the cranks and rings are very good, apparently the bearings are better for 08 and a guy at Orange told me the FSA headsets fitted for 08 are much better and I should hope so.Maybe a tad heavy for the money but a few upgrades make this bike a good weight.
Overall: Just a great all rounder which replaced my stolen(toerags lowlife's)2006 p7,you can feel the pedigree in these bikes, the back end is fairly comfy due to the steel frame and wishbone design, has a rich ride quality.Perfect for long days in the saddle.
[Update 21/01/08] Overall a good allrounder,it does everything well and feels bomproof, the steel frame is excellent, soaks up the knocks very well and its set up for all day comfort, its a do anything bike, trial riding to long distance touring.Looks good, nice paint finish and well put together.I knocked the mark down a bit purely because of the headset and BB that is substandard on a quality bike of this price.
Strengths: Good kit - nice frame and loads of travel on the suspension.
[Update 12/12/07] Looks nice, rides well when it's brand new, good components apart from the frame.
Weaknesses: A bit heavy but not a problem.
[Update 12/12/07] Design of the frame is flawed. The bike has sliding rear dropouts that the rear disc brake is attached to. After 2/3 weeks, this became loose and moved every time I put the rear brake on. Orange has been fobbing me off for over a month now with bodged fixes and 'we're waiting for a part to come in'.
Overall: I have the 2008 model - there is nothing to complain about. It has well designed written all over it. Well, not literally.
[Update 12/12/07] Don't bother, get a specialized.
Strengths: GEOMETRY,STEEL FRAME,TOP SPEC ALL ROUND,BRITISH MADE
Weaknesses: JUST A TAD TO HEAVY,BUT IT WORKS YOU MORE!
Overall: THIS BIKE IS MADE TO BE ABUSED AND FEELS AS SAFE AS AN AUDI S6.MAYBE NOT THE LIGHTEST HARDATIL AROUND AT ITS PRICE,BUT ITS GOT THE BEST GEOMETRY AND SPEC I HAVE COME ACROSS AT THIS PRICE RANGE.
Strengths: Well thought out steel frame. Very responsive. Forks are lovely and plush. I would have picked most of the same components if I was choosing them myself, right down to the tyres.
Weaknesses: Hardly any problems. The seat post was a bit weak and the teeth on the clamp at the top have worn off so that needed replacing.
I've just replaced the whole drivetrain which was pretty much worn out but I guess that's to be expected; it's done a lot of miles over a very muddy winter.
Overall: Great all round XC bike. Perhaps a bit heavy but you're unlikely to break it so you can do pretty much what you want on it without worrying. Feels very good to ride. Get the hope brake upgrade though, not sure why you'd have the v brakes on a bike like this.
I think the 2006 one has an even better paint job so get one of them.
Strengths: A very strong bike but agile too, sure-footed and confident.
Weaknesses: The headset (WTB) corroded and practically broke up after 3 months. Chris King has since come to the rescue!
Overall: Nothing but great fun, even ploughing through thick mud. I disagree witht he comment that it's not so fast up hills - I discovered an occasional ability to fly up slopes, certainly much faster than on my 5 (which is also a lovely bike). To sum up, always wanting to go, excellent lively handling. She's lovely!
