Strengths: better than the 747 which tended to mark and scratch easily, although they still work ( now on the road bike)Few moving parts to go wrong, clean lines and shed muck
Weaknesses: cost, but looked at the egg beaters and well...no new cleats needed as i have gone from 747's to p59 after 4 years
Overall: good pedal, fit and forget, some surface to rest foot on when out of the pedal, releases well which is what i want, and releases when i want
Strengths: Easy and reliable entry and exit. Sheds mud extremely well. Looks good.
Weaknesses: Not cheap but you get what you pay for.
Overall: I am very impressed with these pedals. The clip in action in so easy and feels completely natural. My old pedals used to get very difficult to unclip when clogged with mud and grit, no such problems with these. I've only had these for a few months so cannot give a good appraisal on their long term reliability but I've used shimano spd's for nearly 10 years with no real problems.
Strengths: Nice positive feel Better mud clearence than M515 Light
Weaknesses: Not as good as other systems (eggbeater/Time) for mud shedding? Price Why can't the M515 be like this?
Overall: I recently got some of these for my winter HT, as I was fed up of mud clogging up the M515s. I'm pretty happy with how they work in normal use, and even when you get mud in your shoes they still engage with a nice positive click. Looking at the design there is actually less metal to clog up than more basic shimano models and its slightly annoying that the design of the lower end pedals could easily incorporate this feature but doesn't.
Strengths: The pedal is easy to find and clip in to - feel strong and doesn't appear to be affected by mud, dust, alck of maintenance
I can balance the spring tension to allow emergency exit with reasonable ease - whilst neve having pulled out accidently
They seem strog - I've hit numerous stumps with no problems
Weaknesses: The finish does come off - good vlaue only if you get a web discount
Overall: Really appreciated the positive disengagement - have had v few comedy falls - espcially compared to Time - which feel as good when pedalling - but are a bit frightening to exit in an emergency
Strengths: These pedals are great. Have all the advatages of the older design plus the added bonus of great mud shedding ability, lighter weight. Very positive action.
Weaknesses: Have not ound any so far. Some would say price, but you pay for what you get. I paid £65 which is a bargain.
Overall: If you want a pedal that works, buy them. They're everything you could want in a pedal, whether your a xc racer or trail rider. I cannot fault them.
Strengths: Slick and predictable clipping, light weight, smooth running.
Weaknesses: I wanted them so much I paid full price!
Overall: In 18 + months of hard usage I have only had to grease and lube them a couple of times. Bearings as good as new and I expect to have use of them for a very long time in the future. Would have given higher value marks, but was embarrassed by the way the price has come down.
Strengths: A good weight and reliable platform to pedal on unlike eggbeaters, sure footed over the bumpy stuff.
Weaknesses: Price has been listed but you can get them from Dave Hinde cycles for £60 and when you compare them to eggbeaters the price is very reasonable.
Overall: Very good pedal, a must for racing or for someone who wants a light pedal safe in the knowledge that they are clipped in securely.
