Strengths: Tons of adjustment on the rear shock. No noticeable bob up hills even in full sus mode. Makes mincemeat of fast xc firetrack.
Weaknesses: Bit fiddly to set up - I've had mine for a couple of weeks now and am still experimenting with sag and such things. Front end is a bit too jittery - probably dodgy rubber.
Overall: A very nice machine. It looks the business and feels good except for the standard rubber. Will take a while to get the pefect position due to the number of parameters.
Strengths: Just bought mine and spent the first weekend blasting round Coed-y-brenin. Very confidence inspiring straight away tempts you to attack rocks and obstacles much faster than you thought possible and then makes you think you could have gone faster. No wallow or bob despite length of travel even in full travel mode. Climbs like a whippet as well.
Weaknesses: Shock is a bit fiddly to set up. It's fairly easy to get it something like but tricky to get it spot on. Standard bars are crap - too narrow and not enough rise. I changed mine immediately and it transformed the bike.
Overall: Great looking bike, flatters you and makes previously unrideable sections rideable.
Strengths: Light for the travel, plenty of suspension, climbs well, lively. Does whatever I ask of it! Cheap (as of Aug '05). Better fork that MC50
Weaknesses: Rear shock is a pain to set up - and needs to be set up right. Probably not tough enough for serious downhillers/freeriders (though fine for the rest of us).
Overall: I wanted a full-sus bike that I could have fun on downhills without ending up with some monster that I couldn't ride on the flat - and that's what I got. Surprisingly light, you can cruise all day on without really being aware you're on a full suspension bike - until you start going downhill.
I'd recommend this bike - and I know one of my friends has got one.
I've marked the Reliability as 3 just 'cos I've not ridden it enough to know for sure yet.
Strengths: the bike is light and I find VERY chuckable when your pounding the trails. Its agile and responds well to a bit of abuse. The three set rear sus which is 'adjustable on the fly' means you have a very versatile bike.
Weaknesses: Really NOT keen on the dual control flappy brake levers/gear shifters. The rear sus also takes a bit of setting up - I've had mine 4 months and I'm still 'playing' with it!
Overall: An excellant bike. Very pleased with my purchase and thanks to the discount VERY good value if you manage to get a 2005 model
Strengths: Light frame. Tuneable suspension. Good level of equipment. Bargain price.
Weaknesses: Rear shock exposed to the clag from the back wheel. I make the effort to clean round it after every ride.
Overall: I bought this because I wanted a marathon race bike that I could also use around Trail centres. And for that type of riding it has served me well. Very fast on the ups with that bit of extra bounce for the downs and with the 3 settings on the shock you can tune it to any terrain.I have just stuck to the factory settings with no problems. Although light to start with I have changed a few bits. Namely Hope Mini's,FSA wheels and lighter seat. Total weight is 26.5 pounds and due to the frame weight there is more to lose I should be able to get it down to around the 25 mark! My only regret is that I didn't spend a little more and get the Carbon version. Overall I am well pleased with it and it has never let me down.
Strengths: Remotely adjustable rear shock and dual control levers.
Weaknesses: None that I came across when I rode it.
Overall: I was expecting the saddle to be really uncomfortable, but it wasn't. I rode it around the black route at Thetford to give me a bit of all types of terrain, even with the wet and muddy conditions it coped really well. You can lockout the front and rear shocks really easily, no real fiddling. Once you get the hang of the dual control levers shifting is really accurate allowing you to change gear quicker and ride harder. In the corners, the bike feels really balanced and is very nimble through twisty tight singletrack amongst the trees. I am no lightweight rider, but even I can carry some speed across country on this bike. I would buy one
Strengths: Climbing - if you have the correct frame size. Everyone comment about the shock position and action but its a pull shock so it's much less suseptable to mud. Bar lever works well and becomes second nature - certainly better than a propedal lever
Weaknesses: Going downhill and over the rough stuff I never felt the suspension was fully working, even running it much lower than reccomended, it also was not that flickable. Reliabilty: The monocoque non replacable drop out broke whilst out on a normal ride resulting in fractured ribs. - Replaced under warrenty. The shock was replaced in the first year - known issue with 04 shocks. Full set of bearings replaced after 1 year.
Overall: I've just sold my '04 MC40, overall it wasn't a bad bike but the Meta 5 I replaced it with suits my riding far better. Definately try before you buy, with the large I had the post out so far that I was too far over the rear wheel and couldn't keep the front down without adjustable forks. To sum up it's a good bike for long trail / marathon riding but there are better bikes for general trail riding and rougher stuff, such as the Meta 5.
