Strengths: IG hub smooth under full power, out of the saddle shifts to higher gear (yahoo). Bike accepts SKS fenders like they were a factory option. Tires are robust for city streets and do not seem to be prone to hydroplaning. Nexus components are very high quality. Suspension seat post. Non-QR wheels. Long 175mm crank good since hub ratios are wide. Frame is nicely stiff.
[Update 10/07/07] The internal hub shifts smoothly and the bike handles rough roads nicely.
Weaknesses: Stock stamped steel chain ring is an insult on a bike at this price and it causes annoying clicking sounds due to psuedo compatibility with the chain. The stock chain has a removable master link which makes me a little nervous. The stock brake pads disintegrate and cause filthy coating over tires and wheels when they get wet. The stock pedals are ok for dry, worthless in the wet. IG hub has large step between 4th and 5th gear, overall range is too wide for flat terrain.
[Update 10/07/07] At 600 miles had to get rid of the suspension seat post, could not get it to stop loud annoying squeaks.
Overall: I wanted a bike I could ride on congested city streets in any weather that wouldn't slow me down or need a lot of maintenance. I have that now with this Globe IG8 but it has cost me extra since I had to install: aluminum chainring, flat bars, fenders, MTB pedals, narrow saddle. I also needed to flip the stem to get the more inclined riding position I prefer. If the IG8 hub proves reliable (only 300 miles so far, 100 in rain), I'm sure I will keep this bike for a very long time.
[Update 10/07/07] I own several bikes, some high end. If I could only have one bike this would be it. It's not sexy or cool, just a great city bike.
