Strengths: Ingenious design, folds up to fit in a boot, good gear ratio that allows the child to contribute to the pedling.
Weaknesses: Slightly weighty, some cheap components.
Overall: If you need some parent-child bonding then a Trail-A-Bike has got to be the best family therapy money can buy. You certainly talk to your child alot but this is mainly to ensure that they are still on board. Once your confidence grows the fun really begins and thanks to the universal joint linkage you can get quite adventurous in your choice of route. Although you inevitably feel the extra weight you equally feel the push when you shout your child to "stoke" as you approach an incline. The machine is well built for the money and has a wide range of adjustment to cope with the growing child. Minimum age for use would be atleast four years, certainly nothing less. The front crank and the quick releases are a bit cheap and nasty but other components seem fine including the alloy wheel, suspension seatpost and gel saddle. Search the Internet retailers to get the best deal, prices can vary somewhat. I connect mine to an old "cast iron" MTB, I have yet to summon up the nerve to connect it to my all alloy pride and joy. Make sure your breaks are in good working order before you set off.
Strengths: Easily best way toget the kid out Folds down small Actually reasonably competent off road
Weaknesses: Bit weighty Some components lok a bit cheap (cranks)
Overall: Excellent way to keep mountain biking and get the kids out. OK you won't be doing serious stuff, but the flexible hitch actually means you can do some fairly rough stuff (once your child is happy), and the extra weight is probably good training. Have used on the back of my hard tail and full susser, although not convinced it's so good for the full susser. All in all had great fun with this, and frequently stopped and asked where they come from. Even use to take the kid to school. If you have youngsters, then heartily recomend
