Strengths: Good for ice skating on wet rocks. Great water in-let system to keep your feet cool on a freezing winters day! They clip in to shimano SPDs!!!!!
Weaknesses: They are the "reverse gortex" boots - they let water in but does not let it out. These are worse than summer boots/shoes - crocs would be better!! for keeping your feet dry. The neoprene around the ankle soaks up all the water it can get its spongey cells on and deposits it into your boot - which fills up so you feel you are riding with paddling pools on your feet. Either I have a rogue pair or most others reviewing these works for shimano / or has not ridden these boots in wet weather!!!
Overall: They took a trip to the wheelie bin and will now be in a landfill somewhere - did not even have the inclination to have them recycled.....they are so far off the mark that they can never be converted to a decent cycle boot!!!!!
Strengths: Absolute insurance against wet feet. The neoprene ''cuff'' fits comfortably around the ankle providing a good waterproof seal. A quality item
Weaknesses: I''d endorse the two criticisms of these I found on the ''net while researching for a winter shoe. The shoes are small for their size. Being a UK 7 1/2 I have to go for a Continental 42 for most shoes and usually have to buy inners to achieve a comfortable fit. Not so with these - the Continental 42 I bought was quite snug. Comfortable with ordinary socks, but I had planned to buy some ''Seals'' as well and I think they might make the shoes too tight (I''ll take the boots along with me when I go to buy the socks). Not too much of a problem if you wear longs with foot loops as the shoe cuffs ''clamp'' round the bottom of the longs. This problem can be solved by getting the right size for your foot-sock combination. The only other probo I''ve found is that if you''re not wearing cleats, which I don''t (hybrid rider) the ''sole/pedal interface'' can be slippy when wet. A few studs on the sole would be nice. As I posted this item the price mentioned was the keenest I could find (Chain Reaction Cycles - on offer). I have seen them for £20 more. Get them at circa £65 and you''ve done a deal.
Overall: I researched all the options available and am pleased I went for these. I've the impression that they'll last a fair few winters. As mentioned, just take care on sizing and, with cleats, these are probably as good as you can get. I'm going to rated these highly as they've solved any 'trench-foot' problem for me.
Strengths: Good snug fit, plenty of protection for both foot and ankle. Cleats fit easy, and boot grips when you have to get off in the mud and push/drag!
Weaknesses: Velcro round the cuff, if not careful it sticks to everything, especially your socks. The cuff can also get a bit sweaty, maybe I am wearing them to early.
Overall: Great for bad conditions, bith for protecting your feet and also for keeping them warm.
Strengths: dry feet without wearing lumpen thick un-feeling porelle drys..!
Weaknesses: there seems to be a gap where my waterproofs finish and the neoprene begins...leaving me with an inch or two of wet legs above the collar... Slightly on the small side for their size, but you can wear thinner sox.
Overall: Super boots, a great improvement on my old Nikes (irritatingly offset cleat position, non-waterproof, but v.comfortable to wear all day)(with porelles).
Strengths: Keep the weather out Comfortable Cheaper than the alternatives
Weaknesses: Ludicrously slippery sole unit
Overall: When actually riding clipped in I have no problems with these boots at all - they are great. The weather stays out, so your toes stay warm... just how it should be (in winter)!
The problem comes when you get off - they are lethal on wet paving slabs. I nearly did myself an injury dismounting when I got home - which would have been a touch embarrasing! I now get off before the patio slabs and walk gingerly to the garage!
Oh aye - lethal on quarry tiles in the kitchen too, as discovered diving into the house to pick up my camelback!
If Shimano could just sort out the rubber compound the sole is made from then these would be a top buy, as it is I will reserve judgement a little. I worry about what would happen on slippery cobbles, or when I wuss out and walk a rocky slope in them. Time will tell....
I have had to mark Performance and Reliability as poor just for the sole. If a new version comes out that has more grip than teflon then I would give them 5 for both. Value is 4 because they are a good price, this would also be 5 if they update that rubber!
Strengths: £65 from Chain Reaction - good price and lots of stock. I normally take an 8 (42) so bought a 8.5 (43) which is a perfect fit incl room for thick socks. Rode for 4hrs at the weekend which was very cold and my feet stayed warm. As I always suffer from cold feet this was a big result. My socks were wet (not soaked) at the end of the ride, but then I had crossed numerous streams through the day. A pretty good result I'd say. water will run down your legs and some will inevitably seep in via the top.
Weaknesses: I hate setting up cleats, and the missing decals on my cranks show that I haven't got these right first time. No fault of the shoes though. Pushing your bike uphill was harder in these shoes than my normal ones due to the boot type shape. I found the grip ok though.
Overall: Excellent. Mesh shoes are fine in the summer, but allow too much freezing water and cold air in for my liking in the winter. These are great. Given them a 4 rating as that was my first ride so cannot comment on reliability.
Strengths: Probaly as near to a winter boot that is available, keeping the old feet warmish.
Weaknesses: Definately not completly waterproof, when out on wet hills.Spray eventually finds it's way in.
Overall: I ride in very cold conditions on hills in Scotland and this shoe does fit the bill for me, however don't go buying this shoe expecting to coming home with the "plates of meat" completely dry and warm. Also take care on sizing, go at least one size up.
'OK, BUT THICK OVERSHOES WOULD DO AN ALMOST EQUAL JOB'
Overall: Probably the best winter shoe/boot about, but surely someone could do better. Originally these were Shimano's downhill boot, and the heritage shows in the lack of biting grip, no stud option, and inattention to full waterproofing - there's a gap between tongue and cuff. Essentially your feet stay dry up to a point, then you're dependent on your waterproof socks. Personally I find it necessary to wear thermal socks and waterproof socks, and even then they still get a bit damp and cold (but at least only from water/sweat, not wind/temperature). I also find pedalling in them feels a bit dead, but really that's just because I'm so used to lightweight race shoes. They are more durable than an overshoe, but then they're more than double the price.
